LADWP Welcomes Janisse Quiñones as New Chief Executive Officer and Chief Engineer 

On May 14, the Los Angeles City Council confirmed Janisse Quiñones as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Engineer of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). Quiñones also took her oath as presided by the City Clerk, officially beginning her tenure as the leader of the nation’s largest municipal water and electrical utility.


Quiñones was recommended to the position by Mayor Karen Bass in April of this year after a nationwide search, and succeeds retiring LADWP General Manager and Chief Engineer Martin L. Adams. Quiñones brings over 25 years of leadership experience as a senior executive in utility and engineering industries, where she focused on accomplishing many initiatives similar to LADWP’s, including delivering reliable service to the Department’s customers, improving infrastructure resiliency, and prioritizing the safety of employees.

9th Annual Sustainability Awards Recognize LADWP Customers for Changemaking Efforts

LADWP hosted the 9th annual Sustainability Awards event at the John Ferraro Building on April 17 to award honors to 19 of our largest customers. The event recognized these customers for their work pertaining to four categories: Energy Efficiency, Water Conservation, Electrification of Transportation, and Demand Response.


Actions taken by the 2024 honorees in the Energy Efficiency and Demand Response categories reduced their annual carbon emissions by an estimated 4,688 tons, equivalent to removing more than 1,100 gasoline-powered cars from the road for a year. Electrification of Transportation honorees added another 461 EV chargers—440 Level 2 chargers and 21 Level 3 chargers—to L.A.’s growing network of EV infrastructure.

Mayor Karen Bass Welcomes New Heavy Duty Electric Trucks to L.A.

Earlier this month, Mayor Karen Bass joined partners from the Biden Administration and the Port of Los Angeles to welcome Amazon’s largest fleet of heavy-duty electric trucks to Los Angeles. The vehicles will serve the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and will help reduce emissions, improve air quality in surrounding areas and ultimately aid Los Angeles in achieving its goal of 100 percent clean energy by 2035.

Ensuring Our Commitment to Biodiversity Initiatives 

The Board of Water and Power Commissioners recently approved a far-reaching and impactful motion that will result in the integration of biodiversity initiatives and nature-based solutions throughout LADWP’s operations. The action reaffirms the Department’s dedication to biodiversity preservation and equitable environmental stewardship.

Electric Utility Workers Test their Skills at Lineman’s Rodeo 2024

LADWP, in partnership with IBEW Local 18, hosted the annual Lineman’s Rodeo on Saturday, May 18, at the Truesdale Training Center. Electric utility workers from 11 utilities across the western United States competed in multiple events to showcase their training, job skills and safety procedures.


Although the competition was the main event, LADWP staff took the opportunity to share the Department’s vast career opportunities with the approximately 3,500 attendees, including the Electric Distribution Mechanic position.
