Message from ITGA President Emily Allen
I am not sure what I expected in my tenure as ITGA President, but I can tell you my crystal ball said nothing about leading an organization during a global pandemic! Looking back at this past year, I am humbled by our ITGA community. You are leaning in – raising your hands to lend support, showing courage and strength by asking for help, and have demonstrated resiliency on more fronts than we thought were humanly possible. We are tired and yet we know the need to rise is at a critical juncture – and we will, we are ITGA! It has been an honor serving as your President, and the torch I received from the solid shoulders I have been standing on is being passed to the best and brightest. Welcome President Britany Waddell! Opinion: Social Hosts Ordinance
Baltimore, MD: Many families residing in neighborhoods throughout Towson were experiencing late night parties with police often reluctant to arrest someone for hosting a loud party. Then, in 2016, the Baltimore County Council passed a “social host” ordinance as a pilot program to crack down on unruly college parties in Towson and around the UMBC campus. The results were overwhelmingly positive, with complaints dropping from 51 in the year before the pilot went into effect to half that within a year and to only 12 infractions two years later. Now, we are supporting legislation to make the permanent throughout Baltimore County. The Baltimore Sun

Community Uses Wastewater App to Track COVID
San Diego, CA: If you’re a student or a faculty member who spends any time on the University of California, San Diego campus, you may know a lot more about what’s in your pee and poop—and that of your colleagues—than you might care to admit. Members of the UCSD community can download an app that tells them the COVID-19 status of the wastewater generated in the buildings where they spend the most time. They placed robots to sample wastewater from individual buildings in sewage pipes before they joined a common effluent, and by last September, they were able to note when samples from a specific building went from negative to positive, and then test everyone frequenting that building to identify the positive case, remove that person from the building, and then keep testing samples to ensure they turned negative again.
