ITGA Presidential Address by Britany Waddell
In prior years, we began our Board meetings with everyone stating a word that embodied their mood, their day, their week, or even their month.
I’ll begin this message with my word: expectant. Expectant because I am poised on a great professional milestone with endless opportunities for growth and improvements within our organization. We are coming out of one of the most difficult and unsettling phenomena of our lifetime. This puts us in a unique position of opportunity to truly define what’s next. How will this next chapter be remembered? How much sweeter will our accomplishments be knowing that they almost didn’t happen, almost weren’t possible… But here we are... Read more.

Universities Have a Chance to Reset Post-COVID
Waterloo, CA: Vivek Goel, president and vice-chancellor, University of Waterloo: With the rapid pace of vaccination and the decline in new COVID cases, barring a surge in variants, we can anticipate a small measure of normalcy by this fall. For universities, this will mean a gradual and safe return to campus. However, a complete return to what has long been considered “normal” would represent a failure for our campuses and our broader society. The pandemic has made clear that there are many ways in which we can be innovative and flexible in our teaching. The pandemic has also highlighted the significant issues we continue to face as a result of issues such as historical inequities in society, the effects of globalization and the rise of populism and nationalism. Increased Demand for On-Campus Housing
Some colleges are having a tough time finding a place for students to live on campus this fall. In a June 23 webinar, Dartmouth College Provost Joseph Helble said that because fewer students are taking a gap year this fall and many of the college’s study abroad programs are unlikely to operate, there was an increased demand for housing on campus. Similarly, at the University of Tampa, where living on campus is not required and housing is not guaranteed, there was a surge of demand for on-campus housing. Both universities and students are turning to creative solutions to address suboptimal housing situations. At Emerson College in Boston, at least four pairs of students entered domestic partnerships to escape the pricey three-year on-campus housing requirement. Meanwhile, the College of Idaho converted shipping containers into student dormitories. Forbes

Pittsburgh, PA: After two years of planning, Pittsburgh has received approval to begin a two-year pilot program to test e-scooters. Senate Transportation Committee Chairman Wayne Langerholc, who tested e-scooters during a demonstration at Hazelwood Green in early June, and Sen. Minority Leader Jay Costa, D-Forest Hills, announced Wednesday a bill authorizing the test has been approved by the Legislature. The issue needed special approval because the state’s motor vehicle code makes no mention of the battery-powered scooters. The city plans to test the scooters in a sharing program similar to Healthy Ride, where bikes are rented from a series of docks throughout the city. Pittsburg Post-Gazette
