"Good First Step" to Strengthen Relationships
Athens, OH: Ohio University President Hugh Sherman met with mayors at regional campuses last week, in what was called a “good first step” in his goal to strengthen OU’s relationship with southeastern Ohio. Sherman met with the mayors of Athens, Chillicothe, Ironton, Lancaster and Zanesville last Tuesday. Among the topics discussed were different academic programs that could be implemented across the university’s campuses and ways to use campus facilities as resources for the respective communities. Move Here, Get Paid: Small Towns Offer up to $20,000
Northwest Arkansas is among a growing crop of cities, states and regions offering as much as $20,000 to entice newly remote workers to move to their areas. Some, like the Ozarks, are trying to create a pool of high-skilled workers to help fill job openings. Others aim to build up a skilled workforce to attract companies. Still, others are combating longstanding population declines or are looking to fill new housing complexes. The efforts are turning the traditional building blocks of economic development upside down. Typically, cities have spent hundreds of millions of dollars offering tax breaks and other incentives to lure companies. USA Today

Preparing Africa's Universities to Face the Future
Africa: African universities must learn from the pandemic and be better prepared for the next emergency. This includes having crisis response plans that can be properly communicated, and improving diversity and the internationalisation of knowledge and skills. Lack of internet access and low enrolment in crucial areas of study remain crucial issues. Professor Emmanuel Nnadozie, the executive secretary of the African Capacity-Building Foundation in Zimbabwe, told University World News: “Few scholars get to enrol in science, technology and mathematics subjects due to neglect, non-promotion and little encouragement from African scholars to take up these essential areas of study.” University World News

UArizona Won't Require Masks, Vaccines
Tucson, AZ: Students attending the University of Arizona this fall won't be required to wear masks nor show proof of vaccination for the coronavirus once classes start on Aug. 23. UArizona President Robert Robbins said COVID-19 testing sites and an isolation dormitory for infected students will remain in place this semester, but there's little else the university can legally do to stop the virus from spreading. Gov. Doug Ducey recently prohibited public universities from requiring students to get vaccinated or wear masks and UArizona's leaders aren't intending to challenge the state's new rules. "We are going to obey the law," President Robbins said on Monday during a press briefing. 12News.com
