Town Will Seed $220K to Begin Reparations
Amherst, MA: A Massachusetts town has created a fund to pay reparations to Black residents as communities and institutions across the country look to atone for slavery, discrimination and past wrongs amid the nation's ongoing racial reckoning. Michele Miller, who cofounded Reparations for Amherst, a local advocacy group that pushed for the measure, told the paper that the fund sets the foundation for providing equity in the college town, which is located some 90 miles (145 kilometers) from Boston. ITGA's Prestigious Award Lauds #InThisTogether COVID-19 Relief Effort
The International Town & Gown Association launched the Presidential Excellence Award in 2013 to recognize outstanding leadership, either through volunteer service or educational achievement, according to ITGA Executive Director Beth Bagwell. Leaders See Corridor as Key to Stronger Relationship
Lawrenceville, GA: For Lawrenceville officials, the new college corridor connecting Georgia Gwinnett College with the city’s downtown district has been called a “red carpet” coming from the college to the heart of Lawrenceville. GGC President Jann Joseph is quick to point out, however, that the new gateway does in fact go in both directions — people can use it to come to the college from the Lawrenceville Square. “In our vision statement, we state that we’re a college town of tomorrow and it’s been stated that maybe we need to change that soon because the future is here,” Mayor David Still said. Why Community Engagement Must Increase
After over a year of the devastating impact of the pandemic around the world, there have been some commonalities and differences across the higher education arena. Between that initial moment and now, universities have been facing what Henry Stoever, president of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, points to as stages of reaction and response: emergency, transition and transformation. Once universities had addressed the immediate need to provide continuity of their academic programmes for students, they launched numerous efforts aimed at trying to support and benefit their local communities.
