College Towns Felt Ignored, then COVID Hit
The pandemic put new pressure on relationships between cities and their universities. They suddenly had urgent life and death decisions to make that affected each other. Should they bring students back? Should they close bars? Should they play football? In interviews with a dozen mayors and top city leaders, including those in most of the cities of the Big Ten, many used the word “strengthened” to describe how their relationship with their university changed this past year. Stephen Gavazzi, a trained marriage and family therapist, says that's how he sees town-gown relations. Often, when it’s not working, it’s because the gown is saying to the town: I’m just not that into you. USA Today

Electric Scooters Part of Gainesville Traffic Mix
Gainesville has joined the ranks of other cities and college towns in providing electric scooter rentals. The pilot program launched Monday and will last one year. The city has enlisted dockless e-scooter companies Bird, Spin and Veo to provide 600 scooters for public use. Scooter rentals cost $1 at the start of the ride and cost between 15 and 49 cents for every minute of use. Renters must be 18 or older. The scooters are available between 6 a.m and 10 p.m., seven days a week. Gainesville.com

Universities Key to City Centre Post COVID
Unlike the high street experience of crowded shops, heavy bags and creaking transport systems, the physical university experience is in great demand. And why? Because the “product” that universities are selling is not a degree: it is the campus-based experience that leads to a degree – but also to lifelong friendships, social networks and personal growth. The logical next step is to combine the vibrancy of university life with local authorities’ efforts to resurrect moribund central districts. At the University of Gloucestershire, we have recently picked up that opportunity – and the challenge that goes with it – by purchasing the iconic and much-loved Debenhams building in central Gloucester. Upcoming ITGA Webinar on Human Trafficking
June 23, 12:00-1:30 pm (EDT): Human Trafficking: What's the connection with colleges and universities?
“Too many of us are unaware or unwilling to accept how close we have come to this horrible crime. It’s a darkness that thrives in the blissful ignorance of our scenic campuses and picturesque towns. The lives of our students, neighbors and family members are too important to ignore the crocodile at the watering hole.” - Britany J. Waddell, AICP, CZO, Incoming ITGA President.

Some HBCUs Lower Fall Tuition
Clinton College, a historically Black institution in South Carolina, is halving its tuition for all students who enroll for this fall. Each full-time student will also receive a new computer tablet. Jocelyn Biggs, associate vice president of student enrollment, said the move is in response to the pandemic. She hopes lower costs will act as a recruitment tool and make the college more affordable for families negatively affected by the economic downturn, told WBTV. “This is our way of saying you can still go to college at a reduced tuition amount and we’re here to help,” Biggs said.
