Changing Dynamics of City & University Relations
The pandemic has impacted every aspect of life, including the delicate, symbiotic relationship between college campuses and the communities they reach. Solutions and recommendations for improving those connections are needed. The International Town & Gown Association (ITGA), the leading organization for guidance and foremost authority for navigating this changing landscape, is convening their annual conference to better prepare its members for the future of town/gown relations. Building on the success of the last year’s virtual conference, the ITGA 2021 virtual conference will be hosted by Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI from May 24-26. A project coordinated by a Fitchburg State University Honors class aims to make residents aware of the transformative changes now taking shape in the city’s downtown. Professor Christa Marr from FSU’s Economics, History and Political Science Department and students in her current events and service learning class wanted to spread the good news. That “Positivity Tour” is now underway. Sentinel & Enterprise

Opinion: Students Suffer from Internship Cancellation
Canada: Cancelling summer internships and work opportunities is not only harmful to students who need to gain experience in their fields, but also damaging to businesses, writes Western University economics student Ethan Gilhula. The article explains that many of the internship opportunities that would have been available have either been reduced or have disappeared, meaning that students are unable to find summer opportunities in their fields of interest. Gilhula questions why employers have not created virtual internships given that other activities have moved online, and notes that a lack of opportunities in the field now will impact hiring opportunities in the future.
