Sticks and Stones
School may be out for the summer but unfortunately bullying doesn’t take a vacation. Bullying can continue during summer camps, summer school or even just hanging out with neighborhood friends.
We may all be familiar with the saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”, but have we stopped to think about what it really means?
“Sticks and Stones" is a children’s rhyme from the 1800’s and has been used as a defense against name calling and verbal bullying.
The reality is words can hurt! Verbal bullying is one of the four kinds of bullying children and youth experience today. (See attached resource. “Bullying – Here are the Facts” from Classroom Connection, an adaptation of the Curriculum Based Support Group Program (CBSG®.)
Unfortunately, bullying is not likely to decrease anytime soon. As concerned parents, educators, and youth specialists there are steps we can take now to educate kids and offer suggestions for taking action when witnessing or experiencing bullying.
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.
AND WORDS HURT, TOO.
