Dear Students and Parents,

As we begin another exciting week at Sonora High, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the heat wave we've all been enduring. While the temperatures outside have been challenging, we're fortunate to have the comfort and protection of our (mostly) indoor learning environment. The safety of our students and staff continues to be our top priority, which always includes the impact of inclement weather. Let's continue to stay hydrated and look out for one another during the hot temperatures that will start our week tomorrow.

This Wednesday, September 11th, we will come together for a special ceremony in remembrance of Patriot Day. As we honor the memory of those who lost their lives and recognize the bravery of first responders, it’s a powerful reminder of the strength and unity that define our community and our nation. We hope to see you at 8:00 am at the flag pole in front of the school as we are led by our JROTC.

Additionally, on Thursday, September 12th beginning at 6:00 pm in the large gym, we’re excited to host our annual College Fair! This event is a fantastic opportunity for students and parents to meet representatives from a variety of colleges, universities, and service organizations. Whether you're exploring your next steps after high school or looking for specific information, this fair will provide valuable resources for your future. All are welcome!

Let’s make it a great week!

Last week's heat wave impacted our events, especially when it came to athletic practices and competitions. Our decisions to play/practice or not were dependent upon the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT, pictured below), which is the standard established by CIF. WBGT is a measurement of how much heat from the environment affects humans. It takes into account four main factors that contribute to heat stress in direct sunlight: temperature, humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation.

Student, staff, and family safety continues to be our top priority as we gather information, temperature readings, and perspectives in making the best possible decision when it comes to the well-being of all of our Raiders. A special thank you to Athletic Director, Arlie Kearney, Assistant Athletic Director, Michelle Rodriguez, Athletic Trainer, Gissell Gutierrez, and all our coaches as we have navigated this new system together. While the beginning of the coming week still looks to be impacted by high temperatures, we welcome cooler temperatures as the week progresses.

Girls Volleyball: The Lady Raiders had a strong week with program sweeps against La Mirada and Esperanza. Notably, #7 Shelby Yoon delivered an exceptional performance against Esperanza, racking up 37 assists.

Boys Water Polo: The Raiders opened the week with a dominant 16-11 victory over La Mirada, aided by Paul Lukianov’s solid play in goal. Ryle Martinez and Noah Samanta then led the Raiders to another strong performance against Cal High in a 13-5 victory.

Girls Flag Football: Strong defense led the Lady Raiders to a 7-0 victory over Canyon High School on Wednesday. #11 Liana Hwang sealed the victory with an interception in the endzone on the final play.

Football; The Raiders needed a strong performance last Friday night after a slow start to the season, and that is exactly what they got. Behind very strong play from the offensive line, Anthony Abad had an amazing night, amassing nearly 200 yards on the ground and scoring 5 touchdowns, highlighted by a 93-yard scamper in the second half. Alexsay Nazaroff also had a strong night and contributed with a 42-yard touchdown run. The Raiders prevailed 42-6 over the Mustangs of Walnut High School.

Girls Golf: The golf team started their season with a match against Buena Park HS at La Mirada golf course. Despite the hot conditions, the Raiders were able to settle and play well to take home the victory. They will look to continue strong play as they take on Foothill later this week. Way to go ladies!
