Climate Change AI Summer School 2023

NASA Harvest AI Lead, Dr. Hannah Kerner, taught a guest lecture on AI applications for agriculture during Climate Change AI’s 2023 summer school. Her lecture covers how the consortium is using AI to analyze large amounts of Earth observation data, creating fine resolution crop maps, and ultimately using these outputs for better informed agricultural decision making.

Estimating Sunflower Growth Using Earth Observation Satellites Known for their bright yellow faces, sunflowers are also one of the world’s most crucial oilseed crops. This importance makes it vital to better understand how they are faring throughout their growing season to allow markets and policymakers to respond to potential disruptions as quickly as possible. Scientists with NASA Harvest at the University of Maryland are developing new indicators to allow for the satellite-based monitoring of sunflower production.

G20 Announces Continued Support for GEOGLAM Agricultural Ministers from across the G20 met in Hyderabad, India on June 16-17, 2023 to discuss the challenges facing the global community in terms of agricultural production, supply chain disruptions, and food security. IFPRI Releases New Open Access E-Book on the Impact of Conflict on Global Food Security The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) details the importance of the Black Sea Region's role in food security worldwide, in addition to its position as a global gas and fertilizer supplier. The IFPRI team highlights how conflict drives trade disruptions, causing food price spikes and increased poverty and hunger in vulnerable countries.

Career Opportunities

NASA Harvest/University of Strasbourg is seeking an exceptional software engineer/algorithm developer with a strong interest in agriculture to join our diverse team working on remote sensing applications for agricultural monitoring and food security. This position is part of a joint project with the One-CGIAR Excellence in Agronomy for Sustainable Intensification and Climate Change initiative, focusing on scaling remote sensing-based models for yield estimation across sub-Saharan Africa. The successful candidate will contribute to scaling up methodologies developed at NASA Harvest for crop yield forecasting, bridging the gap between field-level data and national-scale applications. This project will utilize state-of-the-art remote sensing technologies to inform crucial agricultural and food security decisions by diverse public and private stakeholders in sub-Saharan countries. The candidate will build a software system consisting of multiple integrated components and work closely with a diverse team. This position will be based at the University of Strasbourg, France, with potential international travel to collaborate with our global team - working remotely is not possible for this position.
