Dear RTO family,

It's Christmas time. It is nostalgic time. We freely celebrate today, but I remember times when Christmas was a tradition of Proclamation & Protest.

So, I invite you into a brief journey in not-so-distant memory.

I was born during the full development of the communist regime in Romania. And from the early years of preschool the communist system worked methodically and dictatorially to erase any form of wonder and worship of the Creator. The Marxist atheism was the ideology de jour. Christian leaders were thrown in jails, and anything related to Christianity was being erased. Churches were persecuted and isolated, buildings demolished, and Christians were slandered and oppressed. We were prevented to gather publicly. Christmas became the Winter holiday; Santa became Snowman, and the beautiful carols were replaced with absurd patriotic songs in awe of communism and its supreme leader. In a way, I feel that here in United States we are repeating that dark and scary nightmare before our eyes.

In spite of the persecution and hardship Christians did not give up on Christmas and especially on Christ. In fact, we took one of the ancient Christmas Romanian traditions, that is caroling on Christmas Eve, and transformed it into an evangelization opportunity and also, a form of protest. Actually, Christmas became the only opportunity of public evangelization in communist Romania. Therefore, we were making Christmas the most important event. We were preparing special songs and from the little we had we were taking gifts to people that lacked everything. Christmas was a gospel invasion season. Groups of Christians, especially young ones, were singing carols and sharing the gospel in public markets, in hospitals, on trains, buses and subways. In most cities, the communist regime demolished houses and built ugly concrete buildings for public housing where families were living in dire conditions, many times in dark without power and hot water for showering. At Christmas, large choirs of Christians were going caroling in these places sharing the warmth and love of Christ. We were also taking gifts to their children. Hundreds and thousands of people were receiving Christ across the nation during the Christmas season. Even though the tradition was to carol on Christmas Eve, we subverted that, by doing it the next few nights and many times in the days leading to the holiday.

This Christmas tradition also became a form of protest against a tyrannical and godless system. However hard they tried to stop this, communists were not able to. In every small village and every large town thousands and thousands of Christians were refusing to stand down and they pledged their allegiance to a higher authority than the supreme leader, to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Jesus.

And it so fitting that the Communist regime fell in Romania in 1989 during the Christmas season. It all started at a church with hundreds of Christians caroling and singing songs to the King. It was the spark that ignited a fire that burned down and melted the edifice of one of the most tyrannical regimes in history. As Christ was lifted up, Communism was crushingly coming down. It all started with a Christmas tradition.

Now back in United States, our community still practices this ancient tradition. I am happy to see young people preparing and then singing carols in public places, in hospitals, on trains, assisted living facilities and even prisons. Year after year hundreds of young Americans of Romanian descent take the love of Christ thorough caroling and service to the “least of these” across Chicagoland. It is not just a way to have fun on Christmas eve, but it is a fun way for the young generation to proclaim the gospel and, perhaps to protest the culture which is crossing out Christ from Christmas.

As always, we want to reiterate that we are available for you and if you have any needs, we are here to serve you and partner with you in what God is doing throughout RTO.

Love,

Florin and Michelle Cimpean

Merry Christmas, Family and Friends!

Re-Releases Statement on Marriage Act

Faith News Network » Church of God Re-Releases Statement on Same Sex Marriage Bill

On November 29, the United States Senate passed legislation called the “Respect for Marriage Act,” which, among its contents, called for the protection of same-sex marriage. The vote was characterized as a landmark bipartisan vote. The legislation has since passed the U.S. House of Representatives and was signed into law yesterday, December 14, 2022, by President Biden.

While the legislation does not nationally require states to legalize same-sex marriage, it requires that states recognize another state’s position of legal marriage. The bill ensures that the federal government recognize same-sex marriages. In addition, the bill repeals the Defense of Marriage Act, enacted into law in 1996, which defined marriage solely as between a man and a woman. While there are supposedly provisions in the Respect for Marriage Act that provide for religious exemptions, many are calling for additional clarification regarding religious liberty and the protection of religious beliefs concerning marriage.

Over recent years, the Church of God has repeatedly noted by doctrine and stated resolutions that we “affirm our commitment to the Word of God and its ever-present defense of marriage as a holy and sacred union between one man and one woman.” Further, the Church of God clearly stands in “opposition to the rising trend toward legitimizing homosexual unions.” In 2016, the Church of God General Assembly resolved, “the unequivocal testimony of the Holy Bible is that homosexual activity deviates from the standard God has established for human life, and so-called homosexual marriages cannot be understood morally and biblically as the equivalent of marriage.”

As Christians, we exhort believers to live in moral purity and demonstrate Christ’s love to all those they encounter. To unbelievers, we reach out with love and compassion. However, we cannot condone sinful sexual behavior that violates the sanctity of marriage. The Church of God continues to strongly affirm its belief and practice that marriage is a holy and sacred union between one man and one woman.

These are turbulent times! General Overseer Tim Hill and the International Executive Committee call the Church of God to prayer for divine intervention in America and for the preservation of the sanctity of marriage.

The Romanian Convention Pastoral Council has met in Anaheim, CA on December 14-16, 2022, to discuss future plans and next year's Convention. Each organization (AG, COG, UBPR) has 6 members on the council. A representative from the independent churches is invited every year to be part of the Council. This year that representative was Dr. Crinisor Stefan (Agape Church, Garden Grove, CA). Besides I, RTO was represented by pastors Moses Gaode (Sacramento), Simion Avram (Reading, PA), Gabriel Fazecas (Detroit), Nelu Rus (Hollywood, FL) and Cristian Sandu (Nashville).

Church Celebrations

Congratulations to Bishop Dr. Dorin Ovidiu Druhora who was installed as Senior Pastor of Bethel Romanian Church of God, Nashville on November 27, 2022. Pastor Dorin and Ana Druhora moved from Anaheim, CA to serve this amazing community. This is the church we planted 27 years ago. We served there for 5 years before we moved to Chicago in 2001. The best is yet to come! Thank you Bishop Moses Gaode, RTO Board Chairman, for leading this service. Heartfelt appreciation for all the pastors who attended this service!

Congratulations to Alleluia Church, Plymouth, MI, and Bishop Gabriel Fazecas for their new church location. On November 27 the church inaugurated their new sanctuary. Amazing property. Enjoyed my time with them and the great music of the Spirit. I am so excited for Alleluia Romanian Pentecostal Church of God, which is the oldest Romanian Pentecostal church in USA, founded in 1937. Mission Sunday at Philadelphia Church with Genesis Mission

On November 27, Philadelphia Church Chicago & Genesis Mission hosted its annual Missions Sunday.

Rev. Ilie Utu Tomuta, Genesis Mission Director and the missions team put together a great service with world missions theme and decorations.

The special guest for this event was George Breazovan, missionary to India, who presented a very compelling and challenging missions message. Genesis Mission is partnering with Discover Your Mission and APME in supporting over 80 missionaries in over 3 dozen countries. A majority of our missionaries serve in the Muslim world in countries where American missionaries would not be allowed to go. We also publish the Genesis Magazine.
