Join Strong Through Every Mile, a Free Couch-to-5K Program for Survivors
Strong Through Every Mile (STEM), a free couch-to-5K program for those directly or indirectly impacted by intimate partner violence and domestic abuse, is returning to Russell Sage for the fall semester.
The program, which builds empowerment through running, is open to RSC and Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences students and employees. The session starts September 23.
What you need to know:
Who can participate? All genders and fitness levels. You’ll gradually go from walking to running (at your pace) during the nine-week session led by trained coaches. Intimate partner violence and domestic abuse take many forms – physical, verbal, emotional, economic, sexual, etc. Participants can be directly or indirectly impacted. Maybe a roommate was stalked or you grew up in a household where abuse was present. You can participate, too.
What is the time commitment? The sessions will be held simultaneously on the Albany and Troy campuses three nights a week (and we’ll also have a virtual program for online students/employees). You’re encouraged to attend all the sessions you can, but if you can only make a night or two a week, that’s OK. Each session lasts approximately an hour, including warm-ups and stretches.
What’s in it for me? This isn’t a support group, but it’s a community with a shared experience engaging in an activity with wellness benefits. After Week 3, new participants get a free pair of running shoes and other gear. STEM will also pay your race registration fee and give you a medal after you complete your 5K goal.
To learn more, attend an information session on Wednesday, September 11, at 6 p.m. via Zoom (register to get the Zoom link). Can’t make that date? Email Jenn Gish, STEM president and college employee, at gishj@sage.edu to set up a time to learn more.
