Pando Days 2024-25 is ExPando-ing

Perhaps we should rename Pando Days and make it ExPando Days for the way it’s expanding!

The program, always centered on the fall term in the past, has just expanded – now stretching from the fall 2024 term into the winter and spring of 2025, taking in the full school year.

The season is off to a great start, with a season lineup so far of 12 SoCal colleges and universities mounting 17 Pando Days projects.

Welcome to Camp Pando

The Camp Pando trial project went great. A dozen young Camp Pando participants worked on a challenge with the Metropolitan Water District and LA Metro. The task was to invent ways for bus stops in LA County—12,108 of them—to become portals to a sustainable and water-wise future.

The concept we landed on is big and achievable: Use Metro’s extraordinary network of bus stops, shelters, and signs to galvanize and bring hope and participation to riders and water users across the county.

Fr. Greg’s Lifetime Achievement: Alternative to Catastrophe

You could call it a passing of the torch, but in the world of Pando, where the connections run deep, it would probably better be described as a gesture of continuity.

At The Pando Sustainability Awards in April, Fr. Gregory Boyle was presented the Immortal Earthkeeper Award for Lifetime Achievement, honoring legendary efforts he has made through Homeboy Industries for helping young people at the margins of society with reentry. Homeboy has recently partnered with Pando in developing Camp Pando for young people from foster, detention, and drop-out backgrounds, in collaboration with Learning Works Charter School.
