The Fall Season in Montana
Exploring Montana in the Fall brings many surprises. With the changing leaves, wildlife can be very active as they prepare for the upcoming winter. Bears are foraging in preparation for hibernation. Elk are bugling as the bull elk gather their harems of females. Other wildlife such as bison, deer, pronghorn and birds are readying for cooler weather. There are many special places to visit at this time of year:
- One of the best places to view the elk during the fall rut is at Slippery Ann Elk Viewing Area in the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, located in a remote area between Lewistown and Malta.
- The National Bison Range in Moiese is home to about 350-500 bison. Other large wildlife found on the Range including elk, white-tail and mule deer, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, black bear, coyote and ground squirrels.
- Fall Motorcycle Touring in Montana Montana's roads, highways and byways stretch alongside scenic wonders and wildlife, and are anything but long boring stretches of monotony.
- Mens Journal Covers Montana's Beer Scene - and Adventures Too! Big Sky Country is also one of the top craft beer states in America, ranking ahead of even Colorado in breweries per capita.
- The Montana Connection to Jurassic Park Films & Dinosaur Discovery Montana's Dinosaur Trail features some of the greatest paleontological finds of the last century.
- The Museum of the Rockies is home to one of the largest and most famous dinosaur collections in the world!

NORTH DAKOTA
Celebrating the National Park Service in 2016 North Dakota is home to three units of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Fort Union National Historic Site and Knife River Indian Village National Historic Site
Theodore Roosevelt National Park 7 things to see and do in Theodore Roosevelt National Park
North Unit Scenic Byway
In Honor of a President
When Theodore Roosevelt came to Dakota Territory to hunt bison in 1883, he was a skinny, young, spectacled dude from New York. He could not have imagined how his adventure in this remote and unfamiliar place would forever alter the course of the nation. The geography of western North Dakota - and the adventures he found there - so inspired Theodore Roosevelt that he said he never would have been president if it weren't for his time there. The rugged landscape and strenuous life that TR experienced here would help shape a conservation policy that we still benefit from today. The national park named in his honor has more than 70,000 inspiring acres, 19 marked hiking trails and guided tours open to the public.
Fort Union National Historic Site
The Grandest Fort on the Upper Missouri River
Between 1828 and 1867, Fort Union was the most important fur trade post on the Upper Missouri River. Here, the Assiniboine and six other Northern Plains Indian Tribes exchanged buffalo robes and smaller furs for goods from around the world, including cloth, guns, blankets, and beads. A bastion of peaceful coexistence, the post annually traded over 25,000 buffalo robes and $100,000 in merchandise
Explore the lives of the Northern Plains Indians on the Upper Missouri Earthlodge people hunted bison and other game, but were in essence farmers living in villages along the Missouri and its tributaries. The site was a major Native American trade center for hundreds of years prior to becoming an important market place for fur traders after 1750.
