Region Leadership Conference Competitive Events Are About to Begin:

Are Your Students Prepared?

Have You and Your Students Taken Advantage of the Preparation Resources?

Dear FBLA Advisers

Happy Post-Thanksgiving Break. I hope your short time away from school was relaxing and refreshing.

For many PA FBLA regions, RLC Registration via Blue Panda has closed or will be closing in the coming week. Advisers are registering students for various competitive events, and we hope the chapter's members are reviewing the resource materials available to use. Information on those resources is found below.

This fall, Pennsylvania FBLA has offered (and continues to offer) a series competitive events overviews and "deep dive" competitive events sessions for students and advisers to aid in the preparation of your chapter and its members for the competitive events program. Hopefully, advisers and/or students have taken advantage of the live opportunities or the Zoom meeting recordings that have been posted.

Opportunity #2: Region Leadership Conference/State-Only Events Overview Zoom Meeting Recordings

RLC Competitive Events Overview Zoom Recording, October 23

State-Only Competitive Events Overview Zoom Recording, October 24

Opportunity #3: PA FBLA Competitive Events Guidelines

Every student competing in an RLC event or a state-only event MUST have a copy of the event guidelines for his/her events. All guidelines for PA FBLA events are found here. It's not helpful for a student to know have information on the event in which he/she is competing. Please give it to the students, or show them where they can download their own copy of their event guidelines.

For online objective tests, use the competencies/tasks identified in the guidelines as the student guide. For performance events, the students should use the rating sheets as his/her study guide as that is what the judges will use to evaluate the student's work.

Opportunity #4: Utilize the Event Preparation Resources Provided by National FBLA

Go to this link at www.fbla.org. Click on "resources"; click "preparation resources" at the right. An FBLA Connect login is required to access the resources.

Once logged in with your FBLA Connect credentials, you will see two folders: (1) Sample case studies and prompts, (2) sample objective tests (see the image below).

Opportunity #5: Search the Web for Online Objective Test Quizlets

There are plenty of quizlets out on the web that could be used to prepare for the objective tests. Do some searching.

Opportunity #6: Look for FBLA Performance Videos Posted on YouTube

It is possible that other states have had students post pre-recorded video performance in various events on YouTube. Just because the videos may be out on YouTube doesn't make it an outstanding video that meets the guidelines. Advisers and members will need to assess that, but it may simply provide some idea of what a presentation looks like.

When searching YouTube, search for items such as (always use "FBLA" as part of the search):

  1. FBLA Public Speaking
  2. FBLA Broadcast Journalism
  3. FBLA Social Media Strategy

If students are uploading pre-recorded videos to YouTube, remember they are to be uploaded as "unlisted." Follow these steps to upload videos as "unlisted."

Opportunity #7: Again, Participate in the "Deep-Dive" Competitive Events Sessions Offered by Derek Selleck

There's a lot of insight in these sessions for competitors.

Opportunity #8: Plan/Develop/and Script Your Performance (where appropriate)

Practice, Practice, Practice. Practice your performance in front of others and solicit feedback based on their review using the rating sheets. Reach out to experts in appropriate subject area to provide feeback.

Opportunity #9: Pay Attention to Deadlines -- Especially When Assets Must Be Uploaded

There are very specific deadlines/times during the RLC or state-only competitive events period, especially when it comes to assets that must be uploaded. Assets could be PDF files or URLs of pre-recorded videos. Assets must be uploaded in Blue Panda by advisers.

Follow these procedures if assets must be uploaded.
