RIP: The Reverend Canon David Kittle Kennedy

The Reverend Canon David Kittle Kennedy (age 92) died yesterday (August 13, 2024). David was ordained to the transitional Diaconate on July 7, 1963, and to the Priesthood on January 12, 1964, by his father, the Right Reverend Harry S. Kennedy, the last Bishop of the Missionary District of Honolulu.

David served as the Vicar of St. Barnabas’ Church, Ewa Beach, from 1963 to 1968; Rector of St. Peter’s Church, Honolulu, from 1968 to 1973; Priest-in-Charge of the Church of the Ascension, Kwajalein, from 1969 to 1972; Rector of St. Timothy’s Church, 'Aiea, from 1973 to 1981; and Head of St. Andrew’s Priory School, Honolulu, from 1981 to 1996. In retirement, David served several congregations in the Diocese as an interim and supply priest.

Through the decades, David often served on Diocesan Council and the Standing Committee. He was a Deputy to General Convention several times. He also served on the Board of Camp Mokulēʻia. David was raised at the Cathedral of St. Andrew. He was a graduate of ‘Iolani School, Trinity College, and the Church Divinity School of the Pacific.

In 2012, David was named an Honorary Canon of the Cathedral of St. Andrew, Honolulu, to fill the Father Kenneth A. Bray Chair for his special ministry of leadership in our Diocese, in several congregations, at St. Andrew’s Priory School, and by sharing the faith, nurturing others in fellowship, righteousness, and love, and striving to create “One Team” in our common mission as followers of Jesus Christ.

His beloved wife, Anna Marie, predeceased him in 2021. He is survived by four sons and grandchildren.

Service times are pending.

ALMIGHTY AND ETERNAL GOD, to whom there is never any prayer made without hope of mercy, be merciful to the soul of your faithful servant, David, being departed from this world in the confession of your Holy Name that he and all the departed may be welcomed into the company of thy saints, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rest eternal grant him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

The Right Reverend Robert L. Fitzpatrick
