Causes of art

elena-mozhvilo-hb9FQrg7QqI-unsplash.jpg

From the dawn of civilization, creators have connected their work with things they believed in.  Not all artists are political, and no one will support every cause or every work of art.  But beauty does not exist in a vacuum, and the meaning it conveys can move mountains, change society and bring profound change to the way we see the world around us.

With the world's current and manifold troubles and so many things challenging complacency and pulling at our perceptions of "normal", it's no surprise that artists and presenters of all kinds are putting their work to work.  In this issue of Next7, we've highlighted events aimed at a particular cause. These events may or may not be a perfect fit for you, but please do look around and find something to support.  Art and music are powerful expressions of what matters to us, and those expressions are worthy of consideration.

Thank you all for sharing your lives with us.

Opera Buffs

Gala Evening of Donizetti

Every event by "the Buffs" is, by definition, supporting a cause dear to the collective heart of our vocal community:  supporting singers as they emerge into careers that come with hefty expenses.  This orchestral benefit is one of their grander offerings, and an excellent chance to not only hear some very talented artists, but to simultaneously support one of our most important champion organizations.  While this newsletter is going out later than intended and you might not be able to attend this evening, please consider joining or otherwise supporting The Opera Buffs.  They do much to support our art form every year, and SoCal's artistic landscape would not be the same without them.

Pacific Opera Project

I Can't Breathe

One of the nation's most innovative opera companies tackles police brutality and ripped-from-the-headlines social issues head-on, with the West Coast premiere of this new work by Leslie Burrs and Brandon J. Gibson.  “I Can't Breathe” was inspired in the wake of repeated instances of fatal police brutality perpetrated against African Americans. The show tells the stories of six individuals from different walks of life, each forever changed by innocent interactions with law enforcement gone wrong.

Chorale Bel Canto

Psalms for the Soul: A Benefit Concert for Ukraine

Members of the Whittier College choirs will be joining Chorale Bel Canto for this benefit concert in May, with all proceeds going to Ukrainian refugees. We will be singing Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, premiering a newly written piece commissioned by the Whittier Choral Program, and Ukrainian-American choral director Alexandra Grabarchuk will conduct “Prayer for Ukraine” with the combined choirs (including students from Chaffey College and La Habra High School).

Verdi Chorus

Spring 2022 Concert: Hélas mon Coeur

The Verdi Chorus kicks off its 39th season with their Spring Concert, Hélas mon Coeur, dedicated to the memory of Verdi Chorus patriarch Maestro Aurelio De La Vega. Dr. De La Vega was a longtime board member and benefactor of the Verdi Chorus, who passed away in February. To carry on his important legacy of sponsoring the guest sopranos that sang with the Chorus, donations may be made to the Maestro Aurelio De La Vega Guest Artist Fund which provides financial support to guest soloists who sing with the Chorus in performances.

Help is here

Artists and orgs need help from time to time, and sometimes you just need a cache of additional experience, a sounding board and/or a brainstorming buddy.

Whether you need a single session to clarify your goals and lay out some plans, or a batch of appointments so you can stay on track with your next big project, working with a business coach can help. Book a session with Lauri online, or find a buddy or mentor who's a good fit for you. We're rooting for you, either way.
