Well what a fabulous 2 days that turned out to be. I had 4 lovely students, in the studio with me, working through a series of tasks relating to the work of Ben Nicholson.

We firstly looked at his 'White Relief ' work, drawing directly from this work so that students could familarise themselves with his designs. They then created their own original designs and from these made vey simple low relief card blocks.

Printing could then take place sampling ideas onto different surfaces of paper, from tissue paper, to tracing paper, newsprint, photocopier paper and light weight cartridge paper. The paper needs to be fairly fine for this type of printing to work, where the paper is placed on the block and rolled over with an inked up roller.

Students then did some blind drawings using the mugs and jugs that they had bought in with them. Blind drawing ~ drawing without looking at your drawing page and only at the object ~ resulted in some fabulous designs. Students then made blocks from these and printed. Different colour combinations were tried and were very successful.

Finally the different blocks were used by combining into more complex designs.
