THIS MONTH...
Brad Pruitt, Emmy Award winning filmmaker from Milwaukee, left us with a wonderful thought when he came to visit WHP in early January.  Last spring, we hosted Brad for a screening of his film Mark My Words at the Platform. Between then and now, he's thought about the word house in Watts House Project and he thinks it extends beyond the homes and structures we are improving through art, design, and community collaboration.  The roof of this house covers the people, place, and culture of the area.  It's true! WHP has been part of the social fabric of Watts for many years.  From the recent 5th Annual Potluck Posada in December to the neighborhood clean-up we organized with live music in partnership with our awesome collaborator and friend Sara Daleiden of MKE<->LAX to the dozens of other programs celebrating the culture and people of Watts - this area has been as much our home as to the people living here. I think that living under this same roof is a metaphor for family, and that's our theme for 2014 - we're all family here!  Accordingly, this year we plan to grow our board, expand the map of our collaborative projects, and partner with organizations in the area.

VIRTUAL REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT - Villegas house
First and foremost, we'd like to extend our tremendous gratitude to Sierra Service Project for the volunteers they recruited to help us with prep work on the Villegas property. We needed to remove an existing tree, plants, cement, and grass in anticipation of the fence and deck installation. Our staff was impressed by the energy and work ethic of the SSP volunteers.  So impressed that we invited them back to WHP to join us in the 5th Annual Potluck Posada.

VIRTUAL REDEVELOPMENT / CONSTRUCTION PHASE - Villegas house
The creative team for the Villegas house met in February to discuss how to implement the AIA Award winning designs for the Villegas house.  1.Coordinating with the brick mason to solve design and fabrication issues. 2.Laying the foundation for the fence/bench and area for the garden.
3. Building the fence/bench brick by brick.
4. Installing the deck.
5. Planting a tree and garden. Done!

(IN)FORMAL L.A.: The Space of Politics
Here's a quick plug of a new book by our longtime collaborator and friend, Professor Victor Jones at USC School of Architecture.  The book is (IN)formal LA: The Space of Politics.  In the book, Victor cited Watts House Project as a unique example where activism, architecture, and art blend together to redefine how we see and use space.   Here are a few reviews of the book ->

"As hard as it is to wrap the mind around the urban mosh pit known as Los Angeles, it is always comforting to think someone has given a knowing push toward deciphering its DNA. Victor Jones's compilation of critical essays and native observations does just that. Every L.A. explorer needs a copy in his or her back pocket." - Craig Hodgetts, partner of Hodgetts+Fung and professor of architecture, University of California, Los Angeles

"What form will the contemporary city, with all its fugitive qualities, continue to take? This book, with Los Angeles as the backdrop, tackles the question head on, adding ideas and dimension that will be relevant to the debates concerning all emerging cities." - Michael Maltzan, principal of MMA and architect of Innercity Arts, Los Angeles

"The studio at the heart of this book, and the essays that circle around it, show how architectural practice and pedagogy can open up a space of possibility for more democratic and just forms of political life to emerge if we are willing to embrace and build upon their fragile yet persistent reverberations." - Aron Vinegar, Director of Art History and Visual Culture, University of Exeter, UK and author of I AM A MONUMENT: On Learning from Las Vegas
