R01 Proposal Writing Workshop

Training for Bench, Clinical, Biomedical, Translational

and Population Health Researchers

Are you planning on submitting your first R01 proposal to the NIH for the October 7th, 2024 deadline?  Would you benefit from a structured program where you write the Research Strategy component in sections and get feedback along the way?  Are you interested in getting and providing feedback to your peers who are going through the same process?  Can you commit to participating in seven workshop sessions over the summer? More Details Here


The CTSI will conduct an R01 writing workshop starting on June 17, 2024

that will culminate on September 9, 2024 with a mock study section.

Benefits of the R01 Proposal Writing Workshop


  • Learn about the components of an R01 proposal and the NIH review process.
  • Complete weekly assignments that involve writing different components of the R01 proposal including the Specific Aims, and the components of the Research Strategy, or critiquing components submitted by other workshop participants.
  • Participate in workshop sessions (in-person or remote) that combine didactic and assignment review components.
  • Have a complete R01 Specific Aims and Research Strategy ready for review by a “mock study section” in early August.
  • Participate in the mock study section on September 9, 2024 and experience how NIH proposal review works.Receive written feedback similar to an NIH “Summary Statement."
  • Receive written comments at least three weeks prior to the October 7th, 2024 R01 submission deadline.

Eligibility Criteria



  • BU faculty members who plan to submit their first R01 proposal as Principal Investigator (single PI) or Contact PI (for multiple PI proposals) for the October 7th 2024 deadline.
  • Can commit to participating in each of the workshop sessions listed in the syllabus and completing each assignment.
  • Can commit to attending the Mock R01 Study Section on Monday, September 9, 2024 from 2 – 5 PM.



Note: Space is limited, and participants will be selected based

on a competitive application process.

The Funding Acknowledgement guides recipients of BU CTSI services, resources, or funding for projects or research through the grant citation process. All recipients are required to cite our grant number in associated presentations and journal publications.
