A Message from the Assemblyman:

Dear Friend,
I
hope everyone had a healthy and safe Thanksgiving.
November went by faster than the blink of an eye, and it's hard to believe that December is already here! Not only that, but this issue marks our one-year anniversary of issuing Quorum Call. Time truly does fly and I'm honored that you have shared 2018 with me.
This past month was quite busy. First, we had Election Day. I'd like to congratulate all who were victorious in the elections this year, and commend all those who were courageous enough to run. Next, I attended the annual League of Municipalities Conference in Atlantic City this year. The Legislature also took it's first steps towards legalizing recreational marijuana.
Other news from the District and about my activities, from legislative panels to new police sergeants, is included below.
I've also included a brief section detailing December's observance as National Homeless Persons' Remembrance Day. Finally, our
Spotlight
feature this month highlights the Northern Highlands' Girls Soccer Team.
I hope you enjoy this month's
Quorum Call,
and no matter your religious beliefs, I wish you a safe, happy and healthy holiday season.
Sincerely,
Kevin J. Rooney

Simple and Easy Chicken Francaise
Serves approximately 6
|
|
Ingredients:
- 6 boneless skinless chicken breasts
- 4 large eggs
- All-purpose flour for dredging
- ¼ cup Canola oil
- 1 lemon, juiced
- ½ cup white wine (type you like to drink)
- 1-cup chicken broth
- 4-5 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 6 thin slices of lemon for garnish
- ¼ cup chopped flat leaf Italian parsley
- 1-teaspoon garlic powder
- 1-teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
|
|
Preparation:
Pound chicken breasts in larger plastic freezer bag until breast is ¼ inch thick. Place flour, salt, pepper, garlic & onion powder in a shallow dish. Beat the eggs and dash of water in a separate bowl to make the egg wash.
Heat the oil over medium-high flame in a large frying pan. Dredge both sides of the chicken breasts in the seasoned flour. Shake off excess flour then dip in the egg wash. When the oil is hot, (test with small drop of flour;) add the chicken breasts and fry until golden brown, turning once. Remove the chicken from the pan, pat dry on paper towel and place on large platter.
Add the chicken broth to the pan then add the wine, carful of flare up, add the lemon juice and simmer until reduced by half. Return the chicken to the pan and add the butter.
Simmer for 2 minutes to heat the chicken through. Place the chicken back on the platter, drizzle the pan drippings over top and place a slice of lemon on each piece, garnish with chopped parsley and serve.

Alps Road Sports Complex Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
|
On November 10, I attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Alps Road Sports Complex in Wayne. The fields were purchased to continue to provide services previously offered by Sheffield Park which was closed due to repeated flooding issues. Local organizations such as the PAL, Boys and Girls Club and Wayne Soccer will be able to use the facility as well as the more than 10,000 resident athletes here in Wayne and surrounding community.

Garden State Coalition Panel
|
Senator Corrado, Assemblyman DePhillips, and I were invited to join the Garden State Coalition as their special guest panelists. We spoke about concerns and thoughts regarding current and proposed legislation, and recommendations from the Path to Progress Economic and Fiscal Policy Workgroup. One of the biggest concerns we discussed was addressing mental health in school districts. This tied directly to another major concern- school funding. Some districts lost a significant amount while others received a dramatic increase. Coming together and discussing our concerns is the most impactful thing we can do to correct these and other issues.

Since 1990, the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Health Care for the Homeless Council have sponsored National Homeless Persons’ Remembrance Day to bring attention to the plight of the nation’s homeless population and to encourage the public to act on their behalf.
National Homeless Persons’ Remembrance Day is observed annually on the first day of Winter - this year on December 21, 2018. Because of media attention to such issues increases during the holiday season in December, National Homeless Persons' Remembrance Day was in part created to garner a public forum for this issue, and local groups are encouraged to seek out and work with their local media outlets to publicize the event.
Local groups across the country are encouraged first to determine the number of homeless persons in their community who died in the previous year and then arrange a ceremony to remember them. Candlelight marches, vigils, graveside services, plays and performances, religious services, and public policy advocacy are the suggested ways of remembering. Some groups have read publicly a list of names of the deceased.

otlight: Northern Highlands Girls Soccer
|
|
Northern Highlands was ranked in the USA TODAY/United Soccer Coaches Super 25 all season. The
Highlanders (22-1) won a fourth consecutive Bergen County crown
and extended their record for sectional titles by a New Jersey public school to eight. They won the Group 3 title over Moorestown, 1-0, and climbed into a tie for No. 3 in the final national rankings released Tuesday (Nov. 27). Senior goalie Sara Ghorashi and a stellar defense won all six NJSIAA matches by shutout to earn the program’s sixth state title in eight years. Senior Claudia Dipasupil’s corner kicks were lethal and the all-american assisted on sophomore Reagan Klarmann’s final goal. Congratulations to the Northern Highlands Girl's Soccer team, and all of the athletes who participated in the competitive season this year!
