Quirky New Arrivals

I was lucky to have a three-day weekend in Western Maine last week.

What did I do while Melissa was at her conference?

I went book hunting, of course!

Here are some new arrivals that are just plain interesting.

The Tin Woodman of Oz (1918)

There's a lot more where these have come from so browse our website HERE or stop by the shop.

Next time you're in the area, don't forget to stop by Craig Olson Books, at 99 Main Street in Belfast, Maine, where we have a large selection of books in all subjects.

Burgess, Gelett; Irwin, Will.
The Lark: Book II-No's. 13-24.
San Francisco: William Doxey, 1897.
Hardcover. First Edition. Unpag. Brown cloth covered boards with a color woodblock illustration by Florence Lundborg of a figure playing a pan flute. Light scuffing, clean tight copy with a previous owner's bookplate pasted to front pastedown. Volume contains one year's monthly issues plus the "Epilark," a final sally.

The Lark ran from May 1895 until May 1897, each 16-page issue was a fanciful collection of creative writing, cartoons, and miscellany. Begins with the year's index followed by twelve 16-page issues. Printed on handmade paper variously described as Chinese rice paper, Chinese bamboo fiber paper, and just bamboo paper, the sure thing is that the stock is untrimmed at bottom edges, appears in various weights, and occasionally is so thin that pages appear to be printed on doubled paper, many uncut. Important early illustration by L. Maynard Dixon, "Vals de Monterey Viejo" accompanied by his poem of the same title published as a supplement to Issue #22, February 1897.
