Next Issue Deadline: April 10, 2014

Next Issue Publishes: April 11, 2014

Hi, quilters!

There has been a lot of sad news lately: the Air Malaysia crash, the Colorado mudslide, and the death of two firefighters in Boston just this week. So this issue's giveaway is a happy, colorful and slightly silly pattern called "Kool Kats" by Linda Sullivan. It would be a great wall quilt in a little kid's room, or enlarge it for bed quilt (not part of the instructions, but you are a quilter - you know how to do that). Make someone happy.

And I know you will be happy to learn that the "Comfort Quilts" book has gone to a long-time subscriber, J. Spillert, whose 5-year old grandnephew has a genetic disease that keeps him wheelchair-bound. J, please send me your address. (I will be looking for more Comfort Quilts books to give away! Stay tuned!)

Also, will OpalSixteen please send me your address for the "Seasonings" Book by Jan Patek and Sue Spargo? Thanks.

Now go count your blessings....

- Cindie

News from The Patchwork Pearl

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Patchwork Pearl is actively exploring the possibility of hosting an EQ7 retreat later this year. Electric Quilt 7 is a powerful design tool, and working with an instructor can enhance your ability to more easily and accurately design your new projects. I have a small core group that has expressed an interest in this retreat, but in order to make the numbers work, I'd like to canvas the community in general. If you want to learn more about this - or to help me put together this weekend, please email Linda@ThePatchworkPearl.comiwith the subject line "I'd like to EQ", and we'll add you to the list. The only parameter at this point is that it would be centrally located in New England.
THE JOYFUL QUILTER HOSTS NATIONAL QUILT SHOW TO HONOR ALL VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES - This weekend! Get your quilting buddies in the van and go to upstate NY!! This is the closest this show will get to New England!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Glenville, NY) The Joyful Quilter, a Glenville business owned by Susan Pettengill, and the Voorheesville Village Quilters Guild will be hosting a quilt show in honor of area veterans and their families.

The national quilt show, Quilted In Honor (QIH), led by Island Batik, is a fund-raising initiative for Operation Homefront, one of the top military fund-raising organizations. It is intended to harness the collective power of the quilting industry to give back to the ones that need it most.

"Individually, each organization could donate something, but if we all worked together to support this outstanding organization - what could we really achieve?" expressed leaders of Island Batik.

The project has three areas of participation; however, the over-arching goal is for the quilting industry to come together as a whole to support our returning veterans and their families. Operation Homefront was chosen to be the beneficiary of the Quilted In Honor project because of their programs, their top rank among military charities in the United States, and because of the need they have expressed for quilts and quilted projects. It's a perfect partnership for the quilting industry and one that aligns both our industry focus and our grass roots infrastructure to drive as much involvement as possible.

Island Batik is leading a team of Industry Partners, Celebrity Quilters and Sponsors in a

24-month program that launched in Portland, Oregon at Quilt Market in the spring of 2013. The Joyful Quilter and the Voorheesville Village Quilters Guild are pleased to join in this effort.

The Joyful Quilter is a hub of creativity, generosity and spirit for area quilters and hosting this exhibit is proof of this business' leadership in creating community. Over 50 inspiring, patriotic quilts will be on display at The Joyful Quilter during regular business hours. We have named our show Hearts of Gratitude to express our appreciation to those who have served our country in the past, as well those who are currently serving in all branches of the armed forces.

The Grand Opening of the exhibit will be March 28-March 30; Friday, we will be open 10 AM-8PM, Saturday, 10 AM-8 PM and Sunday, 11 AM-4 PM. Contact Susan@TheJoyfulQuilter.com for more info! Phone contact: 518-399-0128

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Award-winning contemporary quilter Ann Lainhart will be showing her quilts during February and March at the North Shore Unitarian Universalist Church, 323 Locust Street [Route 35], Danvers, Massachusetts.
Ann is well known for her Color Shift Bargello quilts that can included over 200 different fabrics, for her Fussy-Cut quilts which produce kaleidoscopic designs, and for her Chinese Lattice quilts that make a maze-like design. (from Cindie: Ann taught at Bayberry Quilters and her quilts are fantastic.)
Coastal Quilt Artists Exhibit
Bridgewater Public Library
March through April, 2014
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Coastal Quilt Artists (CQA) will be exhibiting their work at the Bridgewater Public Library during March and April.

CQA was formed in the autumn of 2004. This eclectic group of women is comprised of quilt artists from Boston and the South Shore. Some members were former students of Kathleen Weinheimer (1940-1996), a prominent Bridgewater quilt artist.

One of the featured quilts will be the "Fenway Park Slice Quilt." Every year CQA makes a composite quilt based on a photo. This local landscape is then "sliced" into sections and each quilter interprets her panel. The techniques used to reproduce the photo involve all kinds of surface design including painting, photo transfer, silk screening, embroidery, fused fabrics, beads, trims, netting and massive machine quilting.

Exhibitors are: Lynne Conover, Betty Crowell, Janet Dye, Sandy Gregg, Anne Marcin, Penny Myles, Graciela Piccolo, Joan Randall, Mary Lou Schwinn, Pat Smith, and Bobbie Sullivan.

The public is cordially invited to view the show during regular library hours: Monday - Wednesday 9a.m.-8p.m.; Thursday 10a.m.-5p.m.; Friday - Saturday 10a.m.-2p.m. Parking is available in back of the library, which is located at 15 South Street, Bridgewater MA.

(From Cindie: I know some of these quilters (hi Betty and Sandy!), and they are the best. This is a must-see!)

One day admission $6 Two day admission $10

General Quilt Show Information

We have a wonderful new location for our 2014 Festival of Quilts at Castleton State College Glenbrook Gym in Castleton VT

Our show is not a judged or juried show. Instead we prefer to share our quilts with family and our new and "forever" friends. We hope to inspire and learn from each other, and enjoy sharing our passion of creating with fabric and threads.

With over 200 quilts on display, including antique quilts, challenge quilts, and our community service "Comfort Blankets" plus vendors, Consignment Boutique and demonstrations there should be something for everyone.

Lunch will be available at the Huden Dining Hall directly across from the Glenbrook Gym. There are also numerous eateries in Castleton and Castleton Four Corners.

At the beginning of the quilt show, each vendor is asked to select their one favorite quilt. Specially handcrafted ribbons are placed on each of these quilts. The vendors are kind enough to present these quilters with a small gift.

Each quilt show visitor completes a Viewers' Choice ballot. The winning quilts are announced at the conclusion of the show on Sunday.

We also have a special Founders Award presented by the Guild.

Directions:

Castleton State College is conveniently located just off Rte 4A in Castleton and is about 20 minutes west of Rutland.

Castleton is between Rutland and Fair Haven VT/New York border. Castleton State College website provides directions to Castleton here

We suggest that you enter the campus via South Street, and take your first right. This will bring you to the Glenbrook Gym, which is part of the Spartan Athletic Complex and is number 15 on this printable map on the college's website.

There are nearby parking lots plus additional parking in lot #11. Handicapped individuals will be encouraged to park in the lot just beyond the Glenbrook Gym. There is a side entrance with an elevator.

We will have signs on the roads coming into Castleton and on campus to direct you to parking and the Maple Leaf Quilters Festival of Quilts.

The Guild meets monthly, September through May, for programs that inspire fabric lovers and fiber artists of all skill levels. We share an appreciation for traditional to contemporary designs and construction methods.

Meetings feature guest speakers from across New England and further afield, activities that support our efforts to provide community service, and the chance to learn from one another and share the results of our work.
