The Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department would like to remind residents of important fire safety tips to help keep everyone safe during this Hurricane season. While all Pembroke Pines fire stations will have personnel readily available to respond in the case of an emergency it is important to remember that sustained high winds or significant gusts can cause emergency vehicles to be pushed off roadways and personnel will be unable to respond to any incident until it is safe to do so. Here are just a few tips:
· Store combustible liquids in a safe and ventilated area. Inspect gas containers and keep them away from heat sources as these can easily ignite and cause deadly fires.
· If there are fallen wires after a storm, assume that all wires on the ground are electrically charged. Stay away from them and report them.
· Make sure to inspect all wires on electrical cords, and appliance cords. Look for loose prongs, frays and cracks and make sure to replace them as these can cause an electrical fire.
· If there is a power outage and a portable generator is being used, make sure to always use them outside of the home and at least 5-10 feet away from open windows, doors, vents, and crawl spaces. Generators can produce high levels of CO fumes within minutes. CO fumes are odorless and can be dangerous or even fatal if inhaled. Know the signs of Carbon Monoxide poisoning which include dizziness, headaches, nausea, and fatigue. If someone becomes unconscious or you suspect CO poisoning, call 911 immediately.
· Generators can become very hot while running even if used just for a short period of time and can remain hot for a long time. Generator fuels such as gasoline can ignite when spilled on hot engine parts. Always turn off the generator and wait until it is cooled down to refuel and always use a funnel to avoid spillage.
· We encourage the use of flameless candles for lights. Have a fire extinguisher on hand in case of small fires and make sure that it is fully charged, and you know how to use it. Never attempt to fight large fires with a fire extinguisher. Should there be a small fire, call 911 immediately or direct someone to do so before attempting to extinguish it.
· When using a fire extinguisher remember the acronym P.A.S.S. : PULL the pin; AIM at the base of the fire; SQUEEZE the nozzle; SWEEP from side to side aiming at the base of the fire until extinguished.
