School Bus Safety

School will soon be back in session and that means school buses will be back out on the roads. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the greatest risk to any child is not riding a bus, but rather approaching or leaving one. It’s important for everyone to know the traffic safety rules near bus stops, as well as near buses on the road.

Children should never walk behind a school bus when approaching at a bus stop. Parents are encouraged to visit the bus stop and show the child where to wait safely for the bus which is at least six feet (or three giant steps) away from the curb. The bus stop is not a place to run or play.

It’s important to learn and obey the school bus laws and the "flashing signal light system" that school bus drivers use to alert motorists of pending actions. They include: Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles. And, red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. Motorists must stop their cars and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again.

The penalty for failure to stop for a school bus in Florida is $200, and if a second offense is committed in five years, the person’s license will be suspended for up to a year. The penalty for passing a school bus on the side that children enter and exit when the school bus displays a stop signal is $400, and if a second offense is committed in five year, the person’s license can be suspended up to two year. It is also illegal in Florida to even hold a cell phone while driving through a school zone.

A Conservation Pays Update

An easy way to save water is through the Conservation Pays program, a Broward Water Partnership which includes Pembroke Pines. Through its partners, Conservation Pays has updated their toilet rebate program and eligibility requirements to qualifying residents and businesses, increasing the rebate amount on a high-efficiency toilet from $100 to $125.

The eligibility criteria expansion allows the replacement of 1.6 gallons per flush (GPF) toilets and upgrades to highly efficient 1.28 GPF toilets. In celebration of this program enhancement, Broward Water Partnership invites residents and businesses to participate in “Summer of Savings” now through September 20, 2023, when eligible applicants will be entered into a drawing to win a Gift Card valued at $250. The prize can be used to cover installation of the new toilet or other home improvement needs.

The City of Pembroke Pines does offer rebates and water-conserving devices to qualifying customers via Conservation Pays. Please note that you must provide proof that you are a City of Pembroke Pines water customer via a copy of the water bill and photo identification that includes name and address.
