Being Direct About Homeownership
with our Executive Director, Theresa White
We sat down with Theresa White, Executive Director of Sumter Habitat for Humanity, to ask her a few questions about her role as ED and her experiences while working for Sumter Habitat for Humanity.
Theresa White, Executive Director of Sumter Habitat for Humanity, moved to Sumter from Lorain, Ohio, when her husband, Marvin, was stationed at Shaw Air Force Base in 2007. Theresa is the proud mother of three wonderful children and grandmother to a beautiful baby girl. Theresa began her journey at Sumter Habitat in November 2011 as the bookkeeper, where she handled accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and homeowner mortgage payments. She eventually began assisting with the volunteer component of the organization. At the time, there was only one other employee in administration, the executive director. In 2015, the affiliate was in a position to hire a new director. Theresa applied for the ED position, and she officially stepped into the role of ED on April 30, 2015.
The organization has made enormous strides under Theresa. One significant improvement is Sumter Habitat's new location at 812 South Guignard Drive, which, as ED, Mrs. White was the driving force behind the renovations, move, and overall operation of both the administrative offices and the ReStore. Under Mrs. White's leadership, Sumter Habitat for Humanity has built eight homes from start to finish to make a difference in the Sumter Community's tremendous need for affordable housing. The local affiliate will continue Habitat for Humanity's Mission, so stay tuned for more! For the entire interview, Click Here.

A Habitat for Humanity board directs the affiliate by establishing and maintaining the “strategic what” of the organization. Mr. Archie Parnell joined the Sumter Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors in July of 2021, and he has recently taken on the role of Treasurer.

Archie grew up mostly in Sumter, South Carolina. His family also lived in the U.K., Germany, and Florida, since his father Archie Parnell Sr. was with the U.S. Air Force and was frequently stationed at Shaw A.F.B.
Archie has worked for the U.S. Government in Washington, D.C. and for two different U.S. corporations both inside and outside the United States. After more than 20 years living and working in Europe and Asia, he has returned to his hometown of Sumter with his wife, Sarah, with whom he has two daughters, Lydia and Julia.

The Partnership between Sumter Habitat for Humanity and Alice Drive Baptist Church, How it Started…
In the fall of 2020, a Representative from Alice Drive Baptist Church contacted Theresa White, Executive Director of Sumter Habitat for Humanity, to ask a few general questions regarding what a partnership would entail. How much is the typical cost when building a Habitat Home? How long does it typically take? WHO builds the home? You get the idea.
Fast forward to February of 2021. Mrs. White received a phone call from CC Newman, who was calling from Alice Drive Baptist Church regarding a potential partnership with Sumter Habitat for Humanity. CC meant business and wanted to talk about what needed to happen for us to be where we are today, in the process of building a home in Partnership with Alice Drive Baptist Church.
So, a lot has transpired since that phone call in February. Partnerships, the funding to build a home, recruiting volunteers to make the home, and being where we are today typically take more time. BUT when you’re working with people who love their Lord, are passionate about serving others, and have the desire to give back, like our friends at Alice Drive Baptist Church, anything is possible!
In this interview Kate Price of Sumter Habitat for Humanity sits down with CC Newman of Alice Drive Baptist Church. They discuss the church's recent partnership with Sumter Habitat, the rare and wonderful blessing of completely sponsoring a home build, and building faith and hope in the community.

Meet the Homeowner: Lakesha Jones
|
|
When reviewing her application for the Sumter Habitat for Humanity Homeownership Program, and the reading her statement as to why she needed to be accepted to the program, Ms. LaKesha Jones’ words reflected her faith and love for the lord. In that statement Ms. Jones said, “I have been praying for three years, and have decided to take a leap of faith and just go for it.” She goes on to say “I know if I am approved it will be a process, and I am willing to wait. Good things come to those who wait!”
Lakesha Jones’ words are refreshing under normal circumstances. After finding out she had applied for the homeownership program for the Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Clarendon County over eight years ago, her perseverance and determination made it clear that Mrs. Jones deserved that hand up.
When speaking to Ms. Jones before the groundbreaking ceremony of her future home, she once again stated how grateful she was for this opportunity and glad she didn’t give up. 1245 Habitat Drive will be closer to work for Lakesha, so she won’t have to commute 17 miles one way daily. It will be well taken care of and filled with joy. We are sure of these things because Ms. Jones is a woman of faith who counts her blessings daily, and she has said that she “ can see God lining all of those blessings up and creating a path to an even better life and future,” and to God, she gives ALL the glory.

Habitat for Humanity to begin building 1st new home in Sumter since COVID-19; public is invited to Sept. 21 groundbreaking ceremony
9/8/2021 - BY KAYLA GREEN
kayla@theitem.com
Millions of us hid in our houses last year. Kitchen tables became home offices, children: co-workers. For many, retreating to a home they own, or even feel comfortable or have enough space to do so in, was not possible.
LaKesha Jones will no longer have to feel that way now that Sumter Habitat for Humanity is set to break ground on its first new build since COVID-19 became our normalcy. This 127th home for the local nonprofit has been made possible by Alice Drive Baptist Church, which is providing full funding and all the volunteers for the home and build. Kate McElveen Price, marketing and resource development director for Sumter Habitat, said that complete of a partnership with one entity is unusual and appreciated.
