November 2018
A message from our Executive Director
Over the course of 2018, we continue to see a rise in hate-related crimes against immigrants, the LGBTQIA community, Jews and other marginalized communities. It is important for us to realize the very important role we play within our democracy. The Institute for Holocaust Education vision states:
Our goal is to ensure that the tragedy and
history of the Holocaust are remembered, that appropriate,
fact-based instruction and materials are available
to students, educators, and the public to enable them to
learn the lessons of the Holocaust and that,
as a result, we inspire our community
to create a more just and equitable society.
Through this time, we will continue to provide quality, informative programming to help educate students and our community, leading to engaged citizens.

Thank you,
Scott Littky
Stories of Survival
The IHE was very happy to partner with Lutheran Family Services and UNL Amnesty International Chapter for the second Stories of Survival program. The program took place at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Kimball Recital Hall on October 11th. Over 700 people were inspired by three generations of survivors from the Holocaust, the Cambodian Killing Fields and the Yazidi genocide.

Teaching about the Holocaust
Current and former IHE Education Coordinators, Kael Sagheer and Donna Walter joined five Nebraska Holocaust Educators and a visiting educator from the Netherlands in presenting “Teaching About the Holocaust” to 30 teachers at ESU3 in LaVista, NE. During this full-day workshop, sessions on rationale, propaganda, using diaries, and Nebraska connections were given. The teachers in attendance went home with many resources and ideas courtesy of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the contributing presenters.

Many thanks to Megan Helberg, Jessica Day, Laura Geiger, Sandy Renken, Robert Mishou, and Josha Sietsma for sharing their time, expertise, and passion for Holocaust Education.
