Spring Season

By Travis Thompson, The Ohio Plan

I was attending my first high school baseball game of the spring last week when something caught my eye. Another family was there watching their oldest son play. Their twin boys, age three, were entertaining the crowd like all three year old twins do. The action on the field was limited as the spring temperatures would not allow for any sustained action. I was seated in the first row of portable metal bleachers; I love the game of baseball from ground level. The bleachers were typical of those located in most areas of our state: five rows of seats probably moved from the end zone of the football field to just behind the backstop. Everything was ordinary until the foul ball in the home half of the fourth inning.

The twins were playing with their travel toys, sitting on the footboard of the last row of seats when the foul ball changed the day from ordinary to chaos. Like most foul balls, the arch of the baseball found the most congested accumulation of frigid fans. As we all stood in unison, attempting to catch the ball, one of the two twins stood, trying to be just like his father. The young boy leaned forward and his feet lost contact with the footboard he was previously sitting on. Unfortunately, the opening created between the footboard and the underside of the seat board was not closed in any way. The young boy fell at the exact moment the foul ball reached the bleachers.

As we all returned to our seats, again in unison, something was missing... Full Article Here

Get Ready for Spring: 4 Tips

Many facilities have fixed and portable aluminum bleachers being used at this time of year for baseball, softball, track and more. Remember that the cold Ohio winters bring freeze and thaw several times throughout the season and with that comes expansion and contraction of the aluminum.

Here are a few things to look for and tips to help keep you safe this spring:

  1. Expansion and contraction of the aluminum can cause the nuts and bolts to come loose. It is recommended by the manufacturers that this be checked on a regular basis for safety and to prevent damages to your equipment.
  2. This can also cause aluminum plank end caps to come off if they were not fastened on properly when assembled. If an end cap on an aluminum plank is missing there are sharp edges that can cause more personal injury if someone runs into it.
  3. Make sure all portable bleachers that are used outside have proper ground sills installed. This is highly recommended by manufacturers and is required by codes to prevent the units from sinking into the ground when occupied. This increases the chance of damages to your equipment as well as the liability risk of the unit tipping over on someone.
  4. Make sure that the portable bleachers are sitting on solid level ground. If the bleachers teeter on the ground, it can make someone fall. Although it is not safe for anyone, the younger generations can have fun with this but don't forget.... moms, dads, grandmas and grandpas also use these.

Question:

We have a balcony around the top of our gym with bleachers on the top level.  The floor on the balcony needs painted this summer.  I was wondering if you could recommend a certain type of paint or any certain instructions on how to paint the floor so that it doesn't create a problem when we go to roll the bleachers in and out.

The bleacher wheels tend to slip a little on the floor now and they roll in and out slowly sometimes or don't roll in and out all the way on their own, and we have to push and pull them.  When we paint this summer, I want to try and eliminate some of the issues we are having because of the floor.

If you have any advice, it would be greatly appreciated or if there is someone else to contact regarding this issue, please let me know.

Answer:

I feel that any quality floor paint that is properly applied is okay.  Like always, you want it to adhere well and I'm sure you will do that.

The best advice that I can recommend to anyone with the problems that you describe, is to clean the floor more often.
