Standing Against Anti-Asian Violence
Last week we witnessed yet another horrific act of violence towards Asian American Communities. Eight people - six of whom were Asian American women - were shot dead at multiple massage parlors in Atlanta. What we witnessed on Tuesday, March 16th was not an isolated incident involving one bad man. These acts emerge out of the rising tide of white nationalist violence targeting Asian American communities and Asian American women in particular. According to Stop AAPI Hate, more than 3,800 incidents of anti-Asian hate have been documented since March 2020, and with increased lethality. Despite these troubling facts, according to our latest research, AAPI LGBTQ people received a mere 1 percent of domestic foundation funding for LGBTQ communities.
We are grateful to our partners at Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy - AAPIP and Native Americans in Philanthropy for leading our sector to address the rising tide of hate and address the invisibility of AAPI people in our communities. In a recent post published in the Chronicle of Philanthropy, we are called to take decisive steps, including repudiating violence against Asian American communities, disrupting harmful racist tropes, and do more to move resources to AAPI organizations as part of a holistic racial-equity funding strategy. Joining the voices rising to demand action to action against white supremacy, systemic racism, and gender-based violence targeting the AAPI community, Funders for LGTBQ Issues proudly signed this powerful collective statement from Asian Americans Demanding Justice - Atlanta as well as this letter organized by Red Canary Song voicing support and solidarity for Asian sex workers, massage workers, and survivors.
Funders for LGBTQ Issues staff member Nicole Fernandes shared reflections from a recent virtual event that brought together activists and philanthropic practitioners for an honest conversation about best practices for funding the movement for trans justice with an intersectional lens. Read Nicole's insightful analysis on the Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO) Perspectives blog.
