Pulse CPSEA Relaunches with Membership Model, New Website
Leading patent safety nonprofit’s new offering comes after more than 25 years of service
After more than 25 years of serving Long Island’s communities and others around the country, Pulse Center for Patient Safety Education & Advocacy is proud to announce a brand-new website and a major change in how Pulse works.
Pulse remains a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit dedicated to raising awareness about patient safety through advocacy, education and support, but now Pulse becomes a member-based organization. Pulse has also launched a completely rebuilt website to reflect the new structure and provide improved access to its services.
“Pulse’s Board has urged this change for years,” says Pulse President Ilene Corina, BCPA. “With this new model we aim to create a stable core of motivated members — a collaborative community that will carry on Pulse’s important work for many years to come.”
Membership will cost just $55/year. Benefits include $50 credit at Pulse’s online Advocate Academy, discounts to future Pulse programs and events (the group’s three current monthly programs remain free), members-only forums, and much more.
“Pulse defines ‘advocate’ broadly, as including not only professional patient advocates, but anyone who assists and supports a person receiving medical care. Anybody who fits that description should join Pulse as a member.”
The group’s new model is reflected in its elegant new website, which includes a dedicated Members Area, a Resources section with hundreds of papers and videos, and a section dedicated to Pulse’s Family-Centered Patient Advocacy Training, an intensive two-day course that will be offered live again on Long Island in March, 2024. Those completing the course may be listed as advocates on the website.

Meet the Members of Pulse
There are many people who make up Pulse Center for Patient Safety Education & Advocacy. We want to be sure you know who they are!

Kira King, PhD, BCPA
Pulse: What is your profession or company?
KK: I am a consultant – a freelance learning experience designer. I consult with organizations to identify a need, and then I build either face-to-face or online training to meet that specific need. I specialize in the healthcare industry where I build online simulations to train clinicians in critical decision-making and communication skills. Essentially, I’m a story-teller, but the stories I create are strategic experiences that guide learners towards those targeted insights.
Pulse: How did you get involved volunteering with and advising Pulse?
KK: David Fielding (also a Pulse volunteer) found me at a conference, and I mentioned that I wanted to build some case-based training in patient advocacy. I’m also a Board-Certified Patient Advocate. I don’t practice professionally as an advocate, but I’ve been a family caregiver for 20+ years, and what I wanted to do was take those learning-experience skills, take the advocacy, and create something and create some training that would be storytelling-based, case-based. And that’s when David said, “Hey, we’re opening up ACES, we want it to be case-based: would you come on board and help produce those webinars every month?”
So that’s what I do; I love it, I love working with my colleagues through ACES and Pulse, and getting to meet more of our community. Every month I work with the subject-matter experts who will be speaking, to make sure that the learning experience will have the right flow. This time I was helpful in redoing their PowerPoints so they’d be more visually appealing.
Pulse: Finally, if you were going to talk about Pulse to someone who knew nothing about it, what would you tell them? What would you want them to know?
KK: I’d want them to know about the passionate group of professionals and the community they’ve created, really focusing on enhancing patients’ knowledge so that we all can be better advocates for ourselves and for others, with the overall goal of improving the quality and safety of health care.

We are often asked at Pulse: how do you choose a hospital or nursing home? Asking others what they used is one way but here, David Fielding of Engage Caring Solutions offers another way.

All programs of Pulse Center for Patient Safety Education & Advocacy are about people who may become patients or support patients. Even if you work in healthcare, you may someday be a patient or find yourself advocating for a loved one. Because medical errors are a leading cause of death in the United States, we at Pulse recognize the need for the patient and family to take some responsibility for their own safety. For that reason, all of our programs help to prepare people to become more informed and involved! Visit and learn more here.
