PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:PROTECT YOURSELF FROM TEXT SCAMS PRETENDING  TO BE FROM THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE (USPS)

USPS text message scams are becoming more and more common lately, especially with the holiday season approaching. You’ve probably received a text message recently saying that your package is being held at a warehouse because it can’t be delivered for one reason or another. The text message might even provide a weblink to that looks exactly like the USPS website. These text messages are mostly scams.

  • If you receive an unsolicited text message telling you that your package can’t be delivered, do not interact with it.
  • A USPS text message scam can only harm you if you willingly provide personal information.
  • You can avoid a USPS text message scam by checking the sender, the URL (website address), and possibly the spelling and grammar.

Let’s go over how to avoid falling for these USPS scam texts.

  1. The USPS will only text message you if you have already registered to receive text messages about a specific package on the tracking page. You will only receive text messages about that specific package, not any others. If you have not registered to receive text message updates about your package, then the USPS will not text message you.
  2. USPS Text Tracking Tool
  3. What happens if you click on a smishing text? In most cases, you should be safe to open text messages. the sender can’t do anything to you as long as you don’t text back or interact with the message.
  4. Check the sender, which should be USPS.com, and you should only be directed to USPS.com for information on your delivery.
  5. Spelling and grammar can be a giveaway that it's a scam, but not always!
