PS One World Seminar Series Presents
Malte Wöstmann on February 28

Attention, please! Behavioral and neural dynamics of distraction
Speaker: Malte Wöstmann
University of Lübeck, Germany
February 28, 2024
11:15 AM - 1 PM U.S. Eastern Time | Register Now
Abstract
Goal-oriented behavior requires selective attention. Models of attention rest on the idea that irrelevant inputs are filtered out, but the dynamics of attentional filtering are not entirely clear. I will use auditory distraction as a test case and present evidence from psychoacoustics, electroencephalography (EEG), and online research on inter-individual differences to show three insights on the dynamics of processing distraction. All talks in the One World Seminar Series are underwritten by the Psychonomic Society and made available free of charge. The Psychonomic Society is committed to programmatic accessibility and has secured ASL interpretation and closed captioning for all One World events in the 2023-2024 schedule.

Carbon Neutrality Task Force Updates | |
|
We write to update the membership on the Society’s efforts toward carbon neutrality. A task force was commissioned in 2020 to explore ways we could curtail or eliminate our carbon footprint.
The Governing Board (GB) and the Carbon Neutrality Task Force (CNTF) are searching for ways to reduce the greenhouse gas footprint associated with our annual meetings.
For 2024, the CNTF will continue monitoring the situation with carbon offsets and will continue to assist in calculating the total GHG carbon footprint arising from members’ air travel to the meeting.
The Board has authorized a symposium at the November meeting on climate change, and we encourage you and your colleagues to forward to the CNTF any suggestions for how this event might best be structured to be of value to attendees.
In addition, the Psychonomic Society seeks advice and guidance from our membership as we attempt to navigate through the important but often conflicting goals. These include facilitating face-to-face meetings between colleagues through in-person meetings while also preserving our environment by curtailing our contributions to greenhouse gases. Given these tensions, what actions should our Society take now? Learn more and submit a response here.
