June is Gun Violence Awareness Month
Merciful God, take from us the heart of stone and give us a heart of flesh. Give us authority to trample scorpions and pick up snakes, but let us prefer your love to our power. Teach us to forge plowshares instead of pistols, pruning hooks instead of long guns; save us from living and dying by the sword. Give us such perfect love for our neighbor as casts out prejudice, fear, or contempt. Suffer the little children to come to you; lift them up and bless them, as you love them. Forgive those whom we struggle to forgive or to forget. Forgive us our trespasses. Create in us a new heart, and renew us by your Spirit, we pray in the Name of your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
(Isaiah 2:4; Ezekiel 26:36; Micah 4:3; Matthew 26:52; Mark 10:13-16; Luke 10:19; 11:4; 23:34)
This is adapted from the Biblical Litany for Churches Pursuing Peace at the end of Whom Shall I Fear?

The Biggest Question
Question: Why was everyone at the plenary session for the business (also called "Synod") at the BPG?*
Answer: All members of the province were invited to hear about the "work" of the province - networks, affiliated organizations, sponsors who made the event possible, the budget, and resolutions that were under consideration. The planning team designed an event where all people of the province could hear about them, even if voting was just by Synod Deputies. As a member of the province, the business pieces impact your ministries and the resources that are allocated for the different networks and events. Resolutions shape the ministry that we are doing in certain areas and you will hear more through networks and newsletters.
One Resolution
Anti-Human Trafficking - We passed a resolution that calls on the province to respond to the horrors of human trafficking. You can see the details of this resolution and resources complied by the network by going to the network's webpage. Make sure to look for details about the July 30, 2022 World Day against Trafficking in Persons and the January's "National Human Trafficking Awareness Month" with the main day of observance being January 11, 2023.
*the most common question on the feedback received.
|
|
The Resolutions
You can find all of the resolutions that were passed at Synod on this webpage.
Please note that 4 of the resolutions were passed on to General Convention. The resolution addressing Human Trafficking is addressed to Province V, and you will hear more about this resolution soon. If you have not yet reviewed the resolution, please take a look. You will be asked to share information in your local ministry settings to help fight human trafficking.

Church Periodical Club: 20,227 steps from BPG 2022
At the BPG 2022, Miles of Pennies collected $202.27.
If you add together BPG22 with BPG 2019's $226.94, it's over a half mile of pennies!
During BPG22, you brought and we re-homed 322 books! Those left over were taken to three different groups. Total number of books for both BPG events is 1049. A special thank you to the Bishop that took time to send several boxes of books.

How to start a gun violence prevention ministry.
Wednesday, June 22, 7 pm ET / 6 pm CT
Sign up for this special event!
Have you been wondering how to respond to the gun violence? It starts with prayer. We pray for peace, for an end to gun violence, we lament the devastation that it brings, but we often wonder what to do next.
We can do more than we imagine. You are the expert on your congregation and situation, and you have all of the gifts and tools that God has given you to engage in the work of nonviolence and peace-making. What’s more, each of us is a part of the Body of Christ, and together we can do more than we envision alone.
Join a conversation designed to share inspiration, encouragement, and concrete ideas for doing the work of gun violence prevention in your community. Bring your hopes, fears, and determination to make a difference. We will, with God’s help.

Christmas
at Sea -
a thank you note
|
|
On behalf of the Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI), thank you for your May 10, 2022 donation of 18 hats, 12 scarves, 5 cowls, and personalized Christmas cards from the Province V Gathering in support of Christmas at Sea (CAS).
Going strong since 1898, CAS is our tradition of giving handmade gifts to mariners at Christmastime. We do this as an expression of appreciation for all mariners do to make our modern way of life possible. Ninety percent of everything we touch and feel comes to us over water.
In 2021, SCI delivered 9,984 knit and crochet garments to international seafarers calling on the Port of New York and New Jersey. An additional 10,395 knit and crochet garments were sent west for river mariners working U.S. inland waterways.
None of this would be possible without your support, and we are truly grateful.
With gratitude,
Joanne Bartosik
Senior Manager of Development and Christmas at Sea

EpisGOpal Race
Sat September 3 - Sun September 11, 2022
The United Thank Offering and Episcopal Migration Ministries are teaming up to bring you the 3rd Annual Great EpisGOpal Race! Grab your sneakers and join together in gratitude to race your way September 3.
Building on 20 years of partnership, UTO and EMM are coming together for the 2022 Great EpisGOpal Race. Through this race, we hope to promote the practice of gratitude for our bodies, environments, communities, and neighbors. The funds raised from this race will support EMM’s Neighbor to Neighbor initiative and the 2022 UTO Ingathering. Neighbor to Neighbor is a program offered by EMM, which was founded through funding from a UTO grant. Neighbor to Neighbor directly trains and provides support to faith communities who serve as community sponsors for their new neighbors. Anytime between September 3 - September 11, choose your preferred mode and distance and race for good. You can bike a 10K, run a half marathon, or skate a mile—the options are limitless. Let’s race together in gratitude!

Networking Conversations
Province V's work in the world is to "Connect. Network. Support." Networks exist for people to gather around areas of interest and share resources with each other. Sometimes, networks host webinars to share information and sometimes they develop new resources to support leaders in their local contexts.
There are a number of networks meeting regularly and several that are just getting organized. Most network meetings last about 60 minutes. See their webpages or email their contact for more information.

Public Theology
Date of next meeting: June 20, 6 p E / 5 pm C
Do you feel like our country has lost its mind?
What are we able to do as Christians and Episcopalians amid such violence, hate, and inequality?
We are very fortunate to have answers to these questions. Just as Jesus did, our church takes an active role in working for social justice through mission and public advocacy.
As our General Convention begins in just a few weeks, we can look to upcoming resolutions as guidance on how to work to alleviate our social ills. There is power in numbers. When we gather our strengths and talents, we can accomplish great changes.
In our June network session, we will explore pending resolutions and political stances on gun violence, racism, and others. We will also look at ways for us to get involved about these causes in your area.
Federal and state representatives must hear from us in many different ways! Learn how with us.
Be a “public theologian,” one who speaks faithfully for social justice in the public square!
Join in the conversation on June 20, 2022.
