Prayers for those who gather for the 80th General Convention
FRIDAY, JULY 8: Opening Day
Women's Uncommon Prayers, p. 363
Assist us, Lord, in living hopefully into the future. In the face of change, help us to set unnecessary fears aside and to recognize our potential for creative response. Help us to develop a reasonable optimism when confronted by “the new” and to guard against our own defensiveness. Be with us as we remember and celebrate former times, and keep us from unreasonable yearning for them, which takes us from the work you have set before us at this 80th General Convention. All this we ask in the name of your Child, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Thank you to Katie Forsyth, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan for this resource.

Anti-Human Trafficking
Prayer service and speaker
It Happens Here, Too
Monday, Aug. 1, 7 pm ET / 6 pm CT
Anti-Human Trafficking Prayer Service and Speaker
It happens here, too. In our backyards, in our communities. Human Trafficking is the exploitation of humans for profit, often categorized by sex and labor trafficking. It occurs in every city and state across the United States.
What can we do about this complex problem in our communities? Let’s begin by increasing our awareness about the issue. See the global statistics according to the International Labor Organization at the bottom of this article.
Scary. But, there’s hope.
Join us as we offer prayers for survivors of human trafficking and listen to Cleveland Municipal Judge Marilyn B. Cassidy. Judge Cassidy will present her work on the Court’s special docket which assists survivors of trafficking to recover.

Why Mental Health First Aid
Kathy Mank, convener, Suicide Prevention Network
Over 20 million Americans will experience a mental health challenge in any given year. Many do not know how to ask for help and social stigma keeps many from seeking help.
Mental Health First Aiders commit to #BeTheDifference through recognizing and responding to someone experiencing a substance use or mental health crisis. In this training, participants develop Mental Health Action Plans using ALGEE, a skills-based approach. Assess for risk of suicide or self-harm, Listen non-judgmentally, Give reassurance and information, Encourage appropriate professional help and Encourage self-help and other support strategies.
The 8-hour MHFA course attracts teachers, first responders, veterans, faith community leaders, hospital staff, corrections officers, business leaders, neighbors, and friends. The course covers mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and trauma, substance use disorders, non-suicidal self-injury, and suicide. Former First Lady, Michelle Obama is a Mental Health First Aider.
Online and in-person courses are offered throughout the country with or without a registration fee. The online course I took was highly interactive especially in the discussion of crisis scenarios and possible responses. My instructor led a diverse group of people from all over the United States with varying backgrounds. A few participants were there for re-certification for work requirements. The MHFA certificate expires three years after completion of the training and a post course work exam.

Invitation to Civil Discourse
It was great to be with many of Province V at the BPG in South Bend, Indiana! We gathered to explore how civil discourse can serve as one tool among many to help us build community and enhance our understanding of one another as we tackle tough political problems.
While the definition and objective of civil discourse is simply “conversation to enhance our understanding,” the impacts of such encounters can be profound—deepening our own knowledge of a topic, leading to changed hearts and minds including our own, uncovering solutions none of us could see before, and helping us to genuinely see humanity in others.
During our gathering, we explored how civil discourse fits in with other means of engaging in politics and learned the tenants of civil discourse and what to do when they are not upheld. We acknowledged the importance of beginning our conversations from a place of values and how complexities of policymaking should serve as a motivator to go deeper and learn from one another. We also gained a deeper understanding of the significance of curiosity, humility, and conviction when we are entering serious conversation with others.
Like any tool, if we do not practice, we lose our ability to use it effectively. So, whether you need to brush up on your civil discourse skills or missed the training and want to learn about it, I invite you to complete our Make Me an Instrument of Peace curriculum available in partnership with ChurchNext, a ministry of Forward Movement.

Caregiving and Alzheimer's in Today's World
July 16, 2022, 1:00 pm ET / 12 noon CT
Presented by Marge Burke
Hosted by National ECW
This workshop is designed to give a face to Alzheimer’s disease from the caregiver’s and care recipient’s perspective. Participants will learn the importance of mind, body, spirit and the arts, how to find resources ad create a support system. The leader of this workshop has written a trilogy of her experience caring for her husband over the course of 9 years.
*Attendance is limited to the first 100 persons who log into the Zoom workshop.
This the first in hopefully a monthly series of workshops the NECW will be hosting. Many of the presenters who were scheduled to give workshops at General Convention have graciously agreed to provide their workshops via Zoom.
As this is the first session, a few technical glitches may occur so please work with us as we transition into this new endeavor.

Sat September 3 - Sun September 11, 2022
The United Thank Offering and Episcopal Migration Ministries are teaming up to bring you the 3rd Annual Great EpisGOpal Race! Grab your sneakers and join together in gratitude to race your way September 3.
Building on 20 years of partnership, UTO and EMM are coming together for the 2022 Great EpisGOpal Race. Through this race, we hope to promote the practice of gratitude for our bodies, environments, communities, and neighbors. The funds raised from this race will support EMM’s Neighbor to Neighbor initiative and the 2022 UTO Ingathering. Neighbor to Neighbor directly trains and provides support to faith communities who serve as community sponsors for their new neighbors. Anytime between September 3 - September 11, choose your preferred mode and distance and race for good. You can bike a 10K, run a half marathon, or skate a mile—the options are limitless. A major study on the theology of Beloved Community
This long awaited work by the Church's top clergy, scholars and thought leaders examines the theological foundation of Beloved Community and its threats. It addresses such important topics as the legacy and sin of white supremacy, economic disparity, racial healing, and the call for reparations.
"I am so grateful for the... work of the theologians and bishops who have spent the last five years working on [this study] . . . This is hard and holy work, not to hurt or harm, but to help and heal."
—Michael B. Curry, the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church

Networking Conversations
Province V's work in the world is to "Connect. Network. Support." Networks exist for people to gather around areas of interest and share resources with each other. Sometimes, networks host webinars to share information and sometimes they develop new resources to support leaders in their local contexts.
There are a number of networks meeting regularly and several that are just getting organized. Most network meetings last about 60 minutes. See their webpages or email their contact for more information.

A diverse group of men and women, new and seasoned clergy spouses spent a weekend together facilitated by The Partner's Path exploring such topics as soul care and our relationships (public and private) to the church. There was daily yoga, optional hiking/walks and plenty of time for reflection and respite. We gathered nightly at the campfire to share and listen to each other's stories and experiences. Attendees also got one on one time with their chaplain. It was a great success and the clergy spouses are looking forward to gathering together again for an end of summer picnic. Our next zoom will be sept 12th, 7pm (central time), where we will discuss what it takes to put on a retreat or other diocesan wide clergy spouse event.

Dismantling Racism
Date of next meeting: July 14, 1 pm ET / 12 noon CT
The intent of the Dismantling Racism Network is to inspire and sustain this work across the faith communities of Province V. To that end, our meetings will have a 3 month rotation of focus and content: 1) Planning and Brainstorming 2) Resources; and 3) Spiritual Practices for the Journey. This allows people to plug in as is fits your needs and interested without necessarily committing to a meeting every month.
Our July meeting (moved to July 14th so as not to conflict with General Convention) will be a Planning and Brainstorming session, with 2 primary topics: 1) What do you need (so that we can plan future sessions) and 2) Planning for a gathering of those doing this work in parish and Diocesan settings, scheduled for Monday, October 31 - Wednesday, November 2 at Bellwether Farm in the Diocese of Ohio.
