The Monitor Boys: The Crew of the Union's First Ironclad
John V. Quarstein
Tuesday, December 4, 2012
...The USS Monitor was the U.S. Navy's first ironclad warship, and she rose to glory and forever changed naval warfare at the Battle of Hampton Roads in March of 1862. Decisgned by the Swedish engineer and inventor John Ericsson, Monitor was described as "cheesebox on a raft." A heavy, round, revolving iron turret on the deck housed two guns side by side. Aside from the turret, a small pilothouse, a detachable smokestack and a few fittings, the bulk of the ship was below the waterline to prevent damage from cannon fire. The author, John Quarstein, has compiled a comprehensive picture of the lives of those who served on the ship. Just living aboard an ironclad required uncommon effort and fortitude, and the 100 plus men courageous enough to do so shared a strong bond forged through storms, battles, boredom and disaster. The Monitor Boys, a moniker the men gave themselves, offers an in-depth look into this legendary vessel and the men who sailed her into history.

Enemies: A History of the FBI
Tim Weiner Thursday, January 15, 2013
...Most people think of the events of 9/11 as being the catalyst for America's war on terror. The fact is, America has been fighting terror for close to a century. Over this span of time the FBI has moved against terrorists, spies, communists and anyone it deemed subversive - including an occasional U.S. president. We may think of the FBI as America's police force, however, secret intelligence is the Bureau's first and foremost mission. Enemies is the story of how presidents have used the FBI to conduct political warfare. The secret intelligence and surveillance techniques employed by the FBI have created a tug-of-war between national security and civil liberties. With a long and storied past, the FBI has become the most powerful intelligence service the United States possesses, - Enemies is the first definitive account of this history.

The Triple Agent
Joby Warrick Tuesday, February 19, 2013
...In December 2009, a group of the CIA's top terrorist hunters gathered at a secret base in Afghanistan to greet a rising superspy: Humam Khalil al-Balawi, a Jordanian who had infiltrated the upper ranks of al-Qaeda. For months, he had sent shocking revelations from inside the terrorist network and now promised to help the CIA assassinate Osama bin Laden's top deputy. Instead, as he stepped from his car, al-Balawi detonated a 30-pound bomb, instantly killing seven CIA operatives and giving the agency its worst loss of life in decades. Now, with breathless momentum and rare inside access, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Joby Warrick takes us deep inside the CIA's war against al_Qaeda for an unforgettable portrait of both Humam Khalil al-Balawi and the veteran agents whose fierce desire to avenge 9/11 led to a terrible miscalculation.

December 1941: 31 Days that Changed America and Saved the World
Craig Shirley Tuesday, March 12, 2013
..In the days leading up to December 7, 1941, most Americans were feeling better than they had in years. The holidays were approaching and we were finally emerging from the clutches of the Great Depression. However, the Third Reich and the British were engaged in massive tank battles along Africa's Mediterranean coast, and hundreds of thousands of German troops were invading Russia. But with their memory still fresh from our involvement in World War I, Americans did not want anything to do with these struggles. However, the apocalypse that rained down on that unsuspecting, peaceful Hawaiian Sunday morning and the subsequent U.S. reaction changed everything. On December 1941, Craig Shirley painstakingly accounts for each day of this historic month, providing readers views from many unique and important perspectives of a period of time that shaped the world we live in today..
