Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)

Project Update: March 2023

Project Overview

Last year, in April 2022, the City of Miami Beach embarked on a new project to upgrade water meters with new advanced metering technology citywide. This state-of-the-art technology is enhancing customer service and making a big difference in the way residents and businesses manage their water usage by having the ability to monitor consumption in real time.

The city is working with Utility Metering Solutions (UMS) to ensure the upgrades are done efficiently and correctly. We anticipate completing all meter exchanges throughout Miami Beach by the end of 2023.

At this time, more than 80% of water meters throughout the city have already received the upgrade and crews are working daily on more and more switchovers.

What's Happening

The remaining neighborhoods where switchovers need to take place are: La Gorce Island, Sunset Harbour, Collins Park, Lake View, West Avenue (south of 14 Street), Collins Avenue and properties that require special coordination.

Crew vehicles have “City of Miami Beach Contractor” decals. Water meters are typically located in the front yard, or on the sidewalk, and do not require entry into the premises. However, some properties have meters that are located in the rear of the property or in alleys. In such cases, an appointment is required to access meters. Convenient appointment times may be scheduled with the installation contractor.

You do not need to be home or onsite for business properties, but please ensure that access to your water meter is not obstructed and that pets are secured. There will be a brief and temporary water service interruption in order to complete the meter upgrade. After the new meter installation, it is normal for some dust and debris to be caught in the faucet aerator. If you experience a drop in water pressure, please clean all aerators and allow the water to run with constant flow for a few minutes to flush the line.

The week following your water meter switchover, please visit eyeonwater.com to create an account and take full advantage of the new metering technology available to you. Below is a sample image depicting how customers can track their water usage. Please note, the system takes a few days to sync after your new meter is installed, so it won't work if you try to sign up immediately. Please click here for detailed instructions that explain how to sign up for an Eye On Water account.

Timeline

New meter installations will continue, citywide, throughout 2023. A typical water meter installation takes about one hour and requires a short interruption in water service.

Work hours are weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and some Saturdays. Extended time is subject to city approval and community notification. Schedules may be impacted by inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

What to Expect

  • An authorized city contractor will perform the installations.
  • The contractor will attempt to speak with a property representative onsite, before starting each installation.
  • Vehicles will be clearly marked with city / AMI branding.
  • There will be some adjustments to the billing cycle.
