We are pleased to announce that we are buying the Cruise in Country Diner property to provide much-needed improvements to the intersection of Farmington and River roads.

The purchase benefits both Washington County travelers and the Hummel family, which owns the diner. The Hummels are ready to retire and begin a new chapter. We will install a roundabout, the option preferred by the public during May 2020 online open house. Other options also would have impacted the diner.

“Washington County has an excellent traffic plan,” said Nancy Newman Hummel, Cruise In County Diner co-owner. “This intersection is in dire need of a roundabout to handle not only car traffic, but the great amount of large truck traffic.

“We are very appreciative and thankful for the support the community has given to our Cruise In Country Diner. But we are also very excited to retire and do a little traveling. The County has been great to work with and considerate of our needs, making this transition easier. Thanks to everyone!”

"The Cruise In Country Diner family was pleasure to work with," said Renus Kelfkens, Farmington and River Roads Intersection Project Manager, Land Use & Transportation. “While we are sad to see this Hillsboro icon close, we wish the family many happy adventures."

We're planning an open house for the fall. For more information, visit the project webpage or email Capital Project Services or call 503-846-7822.
