Look Up! (With Protection)

by Tim Lampman

As most of you living under the sun know, there will be a solar eclipse event on Monday 4/8/2024. I would like to remind everyone that although it is safe to be outdoors during this event, it's crucial to protect your eyes if you plan to look at the eclipse directly. Looking directly at the sun during an eclipse can cause serious eye damage or even permanent blindness. If you plan on looking at the eclipse, please make sure you are wearing special and authentic eclipse glasses, or that any eyewear you are using meets the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 12312-12  (sometimes written as ISO 12312-2:2015) international safety standard. Filters that are ISO 12312-2 compliant not only reduce visible sunlight to safe and comfortable levels but also block all but a tiny fraction of solar UV and IR radiation. You also want to make sure that they are AAS (American Astronomical Society) 2024 approved. Click here for more information on how to safely view the eclipse. Thanks so much and be safe if you plan on observing this rare event.
