Disability Day at the Capitol

Inside the Minnesota Capitol, ProAct participants and staff joined people with disabilities, caretakers, and community advocates in celebration of Disability Advocacy Day. The rotunda was filled with signs and cheers as everyone gathered celebrating the rights of people with disabilities, and how important it is to support them and their caregivers.

Those that made the trip to the Capitol were joined virtually from ProAct's Eagan, Shakopee, and Red Wing sites as participants and staff watched livestreams with cheers and signs of their own.

Speakers including Governor Walz and attending legislators addressed the crowd, attributing how far we have come to the self-advocacy from people with disabilities, the work of caregivers, and the support from community members that we have come so far. At ProAct, our participants and staff strive to be a part of our community and the cheering crowd made everyone feel right at home.

Easter Peeps and Green Treats

The month of March provided many exciting opportunities for participants across the ProAct Sites.

In Red Wing, a lot of fun was had celebrating St Patrick's Day with bingo and face painting activities. In addition, participants got to learn all about dental hygiene with a science experiment featuring eggs. The excitement kept coming with fun activities at Great Day Farm and advocacy at the Minnesota Capitol.

In Shakopee, participants continued moving and grooving during dance parties and joining ProAct's other Minnesota sites for Disability Day both at the capitol and via livestream in Shakopee. The volunteer class showed their love for giving back to the community by helping at Feed My Starving Children. All the while tasty treats were enjoyed during lunch excursions including getting out for DQ Cone Day.

In Eagan, there was a lot to learn as participants enjoyed some of the wonderful museums Minnesota has to offer. The History Center, the Pavek Museum, and the Schubert Museum of Music had so much to see and do. Adding on to the musical entertainment, class outings this month included going out to see Bob Marley's music biopic, One Love, and Wonka.

Finally, Hudson participants were out and about on shopping trips and taking in the splendor during a tour of the American Swedish Institute. There was plenty of holiday spirit, as well, with green treats and games for St Patrick's Day and the annual Easter Peep Dioramas.

Monthly, ProAct’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee focuses on educating staff, participants and stakeholders in areas of culture, diversity, and disability. The committee chooses one diversity related area and a disability as its educational focuses for the month. Bulletin boards, e-mails, class projects and other tools are used to educate staff and participants at each of our four locations.

The committee chose Brain Injury Awareness and World Oral Health Awareness for the month of March.
