Fun For All at Nickelodeon Universe

This January, a single ask provided for an incredible adventure. Joy Newgard, Shakopee Direct Service Professional, took the initiative and reached out to the Mall of America Promotions Department to see if there were any special deals or discounts. Not only did Promotions say yes, but they went above and beyond to deliver a stack of Mystery Tickets, each good for at least one free ride in Nickelodeon Universe!

Shakopee shared this wonderful response with other ProAct locations so that over 50 participants from Shakopee, Eagan and Hudson were able to partake in the Nickelodeon Universe Adventure! Whether it was the carousel or swings, the thrilling roller coaster, or Paul Bunyan's Log Ride, participants and staff experienced the joy of one of Minnesota's greatest tourist attractions.

The employees were so accommodating, and participants were able to enjoy every moment filled with smiles and laughter.

This first adventure was a wonderful surprise, and we hope there will be more adventures at Nickelodeon Universe in the future.

New Year, New Adventures!

We kicked off the new year with a wide variety of fun activities across the ProAct sites.

In Red Wing, the month started out with good news as the new gym is ready for activities. There is fresh paint, the basketball hoops are hung up, and the gym curtain is now raised. They rounded out the month with fulfilling activities in Self-Advocacy class and volunteering with Feed My Starving Children!

In Shakopee, Active Games class got pretty creative as golf putters and ping pong rackets started making an appearance. They kept on moving and grooving with a dance party. Topping off the month, they were lucky to have Golden Gopher sportscaster Dick Jonkowski stop by to spend some time with participants, gifting posters and signing memorabilia.

In Eagan, there were plenty of snacks, crafts, and art. During a trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Art, one group met a very nice couple who generously provided tickets to an Exhibition on Native Photography. In response, the staff at MIA covered the rest of the tickets needed so the whole group could attend. We cannot express how much we love our community!

Finally, Hudson participants had a thrilling experience at Snake Discovery in Maplewood learning about reptiles and, for those that dared, getting a chance to meet their resident alligator, Rex. The fun kept coming with a shopping trip to Paisley Cow and lots of craft projects. Participants also showed their appreciation with thank you cards in honor of National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

Monthly, ProAct’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee focuses on educating staff, participants and stakeholders in areas of culture, diversity, and disability. The committee chooses one diversity related area and a disability as its educational focuses for the month. Bulletin boards, e-mails, class projects and other tools are used to educate staff and participants at each of our four locations.

The committee chose Thyroid Awareness and Martin Luther King Day for the month of January.
