Dear Friends,

Last month we had a good friend of the shop doing our monthly Troy Night Out demo. Coming back from a flame off with Tammy Ball at CHAMPS in Vegas, Tommy Lynch threw down all night after only 3 hours of sleep. Tommy just kept going and going, even after the eleven o'clock marker because he was afraid that he would fall asleep if he were to sit down. He banged out section after section using some pre-made tubing from Jason Hedman and J-Red. The vac-stack tubing from Hedman was fire and ice combo with clear in between, which looked amazing.  The hand-pulled tubing from J-Red was cobalt over slyme and looked really nice both before and after it was stretched out. The crowd surrounded Tommy and watched him as he worked all night.   Tommy used some of his signature techniques to create a color worked and liquid incased direct inject tube, dome, dish and dabber. As an added bonus the Lynch's brought along their millie and murrini collection to show to other collectors. Thanks Tommy and Karrie for coming, and showing what other glassblowers and collectors from New York bring to the table!

Jack Steel and I had a great time last month at the American Glass Expo in Las Vegas, NV.  We were glad to see both old and new faces at the expo. We have been making, packing and shipping out orders since the day we got back. We should have all of those orders taken care of by the time we leave for our next trip in April.

We have a couple of events coming up in April before Troy Night Out.  We are heading down to Austin, TX for April 19th-23rd.  Our first stop will be the Armadillo Art Glass Initiative, which Phil & Brad will be doing a demo at.  We will continue to stay in Austin for the Glassroots Art Show where we will be doing the trade show as well as a demo. For more information on either event click the links.

This month we welcome Scott Griffin from Ithaca, NY for our Troy Night Out demo.  Scott is the founder and operator of Griffin Glass Tools. He has been working with glass since 1995 when he started in Eugene, OR.  Scott and his team create some great tools that many glassworkers love.

If you've ever wanted to seriously get into glassblowing, then this may be your chance.  This is the first time in two years that I'm accepting applications for a new apprentice. There is a .pdf link towards the bottom of the newsletter. Please follow the directions.

If you're interested in just taking some beginner classes follow the link to the schedule for when we are having group classes that begin next month. Upcoming Group Classes Available

The line-up this year is amazing!  Our Troy Night Out  demos are going to be great! This year we've also expanded upon our educational side by offering more weekend classes with some of the most well-known names in the business. Make sure you check out the schedule on the side of the newsletter for more information.

Make sure to check out my upcoming tutorials  in The Flow Magazine.

Thanks again for all of your continued support and hopefully I will see Friday night March 29th for Scott Griffin's demo!

Sincerely,

-Phil Sundling

March @ PGW: Scott Griffin
Of Griffin Glass Tools

This month we have Scott Griffin coming to us from Ithaca, NY to do a demo.  Scott has been glassworking since 1995 and has a multitude of techniques under his belt.  Some of his more current work has been based around different styles of fish, as seen above, but you can expect to see more than just that for this Troy Night Out.
Scott has been quite a profound figure in the glass world, especially because of the products that his company makes.  Scott is the founder and operator of Griffin Glass Tools, which is one of the top companies for glassworker tool selection.  In the photo below you can see a foot pedal, which is one of the tools that his company has made that makes it easier for glassworkers to control their torch.

Of Rolling Fire Glassworks Came Through After CHAMPS

Tommy pulled down some vac stack tubing that Jason Hedman made up for him.

Tommy began working on a fumed reticello marble.

Reversal balls that Tommy prepped up for the tube, dome and dish.

Here Tommy was incasing a faceted opal to go on the dome later.

Tommy used a little oxygen to help cool down the marble.

And the tube started taking shape.

Greg Dunn came by and added more to his mural.

After the piece was annealed, Tommy incased a few different colored liquids to finish the tube.

2013: A year packed with great artist demos and classes

2012 was pretty amazing, but we believe 2013 has a chance to top it.  Phil has been studying and refining the guest list for months! With stellar results obviously! We are now running mid month classes with some of the best, which are separate from our TNO exploits.
Stay tuned to Like us on Facebook,Follow us on Twitter,Find us on Google+ for more info on the upcoming classes and TNO updates!

March 29 - Scott Griffin

Another NY local, Scott Griffin is literally helping reshape the game.  A lampworker since 1995, he quickly found that the tools of the trade were antiquated and holding back the modern day artist.  In 2000, he opened Griffin Glass Tools, which is now a staple in most shops. We are pleased to have him in to our studio for Troy Night Out.

April 26 - Danny Camp

Joining us from Portland, Maine, Danny Camp's style ebbs and flows with the industry.  Lately, he has been doing these interpretations of NYC graffiti artist 'Faro'.  We are pumped to have him.

May 25-26-27 - Robert A. Mickelsen **Class**

Last year, we had Robert here for our Jan TNO Demo, as well as our first weekend class.  Robert had so much fun up here in the northeast, we had to get him back.         The curriculum is still up in the air, but the dates aren't.  If you missed out of the class, be sure to get in early, I am sure this will sell out QUICKLY. This is Memorial Day weekend, so we will be having a barbecue to celebrate the holiday as well. We will be accepting partial payment in trade after reviewing your portfolio.

May 31 - Burtoni

Straight baller level status right here! Most of you are so not ready for the energy and amazing skill that is the boss, Ben Burton.  He is bringing his ninja skills and flamingo powers to what will prove to be one of our more.....animated nights. I can't wait for May!

June 28 - Boxfan

It's strange how a man that you only see a handfull of times a year, can seem so much like family.  This June, we are elated to welcome in one of the titans of the industry, Mr. Box Fan.  He is also one of the main founders of 'The Flow Magazine', one of the staple periodicals in glassblowing today.  When we saw him last in Madison, he was talking all sorts of crazy nonsense for this upcoming event. Don't miss out on June.

July 26-28 - Eusheen: TNO & **Class**

Eusheen is known throughout the industry for his razor sharp, and vivid philachello work. Usually accompanied by flowing horns and tight reversals, Eush's work is unmistakable. Not mention he is a great guy! We are stoked to be having him up for our TNO event, and workshop! This is going to be an ultra valuable class for those wanting to learn new pattern techniques and large, LARGE scale construction.  Again, we are anticipating high interest for the workshop, so be sure to get ahold of us soon. We will be accepting partial payment after reviewing your portfolio.

August 30 - Sept1 - Micah Evans: TNO & **Class**

We are pleased to have yet another amazing artist into our studio, as this August we welcome Micah Evens.  Micah lately has been doing these awesome explorations into clear, with astonishing results.  Also, Micah has been producing some awesome Networked Sculptures.  Again, Micah will be here on Friday for our free TNO event, and we will be holding a workshop through the weekend.  Spaces for all these classes are limited to be sure to inquire early. We will be accepting partial payment in trade after reviewing your portfolio.

September 27 - Tubeapalooza III Feat. Boro Farm

The juggernaut returns, this year we are featuring our friends over at the Boro Farm.  Herb, Craig and the rest of the farm hands are going to make a cross country venture to show us some west coast style.  They were also kind enough to ship us out some goodies for this upcoming Tubeapalooza on Friday.  Come check out whats to come.

October 25 - Joe Peters & The Chesterfield Glass Art Collection.

Last time Simon came to town, we were able to put together a wonderful evening for the arts.  This year we aim to trump our inaugural year with the Chesterfield Glass Art Collection. I know Simon had mentioned while he was here that he had underestimated the capacity that our gallery can accomodate.  You know he will not make the same mistake twice.  Joining Simon this time round, is a very talented Glass artist in the North East. His work reaches new levels of impeccable and immaculate.  Please help us welcome in a Glass Blower's Glass Blower, Joe Peters.

November 29 - Tammy Ball

Holy moly, this will be our fourth time with the incredible Tammy Ball.  Her energy is amazing, her laugh is infectious, and every time she gets together with Phil, they make something amazing.  First Year - Alice in Wonderland.
Second Year - Big Lebowski. Third Year - Caddyshack.
Fourth Year - ?. You never know what they will cook up next.

Biography: This month
Scott Griffin

Scott Griffin's fascination with glass began very early on while growing up near Corning, NY.  Seeing a material that was so different from all others, and watching artisans be able to manipulate it with complete control over it was, and still is, a source of inspiration to him.  Scott began flameworking in 1995 while living in Eugene, Oregon.  During the early years of his flameworking practice Scott was learning technique in both Eugene and in Corning.  Living between two major glass making cities exposed Scott to a wide variety of glassmakers and glass techniques.  Scott continues to find inspiration in the material itself; drawing on the long history of glass, and on the excitement and experimentation of the contemporary movement, Scott creates work that is uniquely his own.  Scott is also the owner, and active operator of Griffin Glass Tools which he started in 2001.  Scott noticed in his early years of glass a lack of tools available to the flameworking community.  Since the inception of the company, Scott has been producing tools and equipment with a clear understanding of the industry he is serving.
