Homecoming
2018-2019

A Look Back at Homecoming 2017
For a school and community that is so steeped in tradition, homecoming is an extremely special time for Glenbard West. Homecoming gives us a chance to honor and celebrate our distinguished alumni as well as showcase the talented students that currently attend Glenbard West.  Each year Student Council identifies a theme for Homecoming and works diligently to plan an exciting and action-packed week for students. The 2018 Homecoming theme is Rockin' on the Hill - 1950's Rock Theme.   All the events and activities will be centered around this theme.  One annual event that really highlights the theme is Hallway Decorating, where various clubs and activities are assigned a section of the school to decorate.  Our students will be transported back to the 1950's as they walk the halls. Staff judges visit each section and award a club a prize for the most spirited and best decorated.

When walking around the campus, the energy and school spirit is almost tangible.  West students get involved by dressing for theme days, preparing for the parade, decorating the hallways, and attending the Pep Rally/Bonfire built by our famous woodchucks.  We welcome our alumni back for the weekend's festivities and expect our students to show their overwhelming support at all the events. Below you will find a schedule of events as well as the theme days for students:

  • The  Taylor Avenue Underpass will be closed beginning Monday, August 13 . Installation of changeable message signs and detour signage will begin approximately one week prior.
  • As the school year approaches, students and families must take note that the  Taylor Avenue Underpass will be closed to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic throughout the duration of the project for safety. Public sidewalks will be available along the detour routes.
  • The Park Boulevard construction from Fairview to Crescent will be substantially complete before construction begins on the Taylor Avenue Underpass, in order to minimize additional traffic congestion in the area.

GLENBARD WEST HIGH SCHOOL HISTORY

GWHS History is now ONLINE!

The  GWHS Historic Society has been busy putting the history of the school online.  Go to glenbard-west-hs-history.weebly.com.  There, you can read about the history of the school, decade by decade.

Timeline of Clubs and Sports added
Take a look at a timeline of all the clubs and sports.  For instance, did you know that cheerleading had male cheerleaders as early as 1949?

Have you ever heard of the790's Club?  Besides aiding Glenbard's bookworms, the 790's Club had the duties of stamping and mending books, straightening shelves, and keeping the library in good working order.  (Perhaps this was the new name of the Library Club.)  As the 1958 Pinnacle describes, the name of the club comes from the types of books in the Dewey Decimal System's 790's section-games and pure fun.

66th Anniversary of the Homecoming Bonfire
Homecoming bonfire begins in 1952!  We have also identified 1952 as the start of the annual homecoming bonfire.  That makes this year's bonfire the 66th bonfire.  In days past, students formed a torchlight parade and walked to the pile of wood, igniting the blaze.  According to GWHS graduate Mark Luginbill, "After the homecoming pep rally at Biester, we lit the torches, marched around the lake and encircled the wood pile and threw the torches onto the pile starting the bonfire.  Remarkably, this was all done, to the best of my recollection, without  faculty/firemen supervision." Apparently, 15 gallons proved to be just enough fuel for that
many torches.

It's College Application Season!
The School Counseling Department is excited to officially kick off the college application season with several events for our upperclassmen. First of all, as of the date of this newsletter, we have over 100 college representatives coming to Glenbard West to meet with our students. Last year we had 230 by the end of the year so be on the lookout for our College Rep Visit Newsletter in your email inbox! Please encourage your child to sign up for some college meetings through Naviance.  These are excellent opportunities for students to not only gather more information on numerous colleges while at West, but also to get a face to face meeting with the admissions representatives for specific colleges in which they may be applying. Also a reminder that the FAFSA application date is only a month away, available October 1st! Financial aid for college is on a first come first serve basis, so the earlier you file the better. There will be several workshops in the District to assist with this process if needed, including a breakout session at College Night on October 4th for Juniors. In addition, there will be FAFSA workshops for Senior parents on 10/1/18 at Glenbard North from 6-8 PM and 10/13/18 at Glenbard East from 10:30 AM-12 PM. Senior students can receive help with the FAFSA on 9/17/18, 10/10/18 & 10/11/18 at Glenbard West during lunch periods (more dates to be added).

School Counselors met with all their seniors on September 4th to review a detailed college application checklist and discuss the steps for requesting transcripts and letters of recommendation through Naviance.  In addition, we reviewed the timeframe for admissions testing, essay writing, scholarship applications, and financial aid. Afterwards School Counselors began meeting with Seniors in small groups and/or individually to walk them through the Naviance and Common App college application process.  We encourage all parents of seniors to have a discussion with your child regarding the meetings with their counselor and work with your student on their Naviance account to complete the Parent Input Form in order to enrich the letters of recommendation counselors are writing.

For Juniors, counselors are continuing the developmental process of college preparation by visiting English classrooms between September 25-28 to work with students on college research and developing their activity resumes in Naviance.  In addition, we will host the annual College Night on Tuesday, November 13th, so make sure you save the date! We invite all  juniors and their parents to join us as we convene in the auditorium for a welcome prior to dividing into several breakout sessions throughout the building.   We will hold sessions to learn more about the college admissions process, financial aid and a Naviance tutorial for parents. Stay tuned for a more detailed agenda!
Dr. David Larson, Superintendent
Safety is always our top priority
We value the trust you place in us to care for the most important people in your life - your children - and we take many steps to keep students safe while they are at school.

Within the past year, we developed a comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan, based on the Federal Emergency Management Association's National Incident Management System (NIMS) structure. Emergency procedures have been in place, but our Emergency Operations Plan provides more structure and clarity.

Let's look at some of our safety measures:
  • Our faculty and staff have fostered relationships with our students, providing students a trusted adult to talk with.
  • Every day, our student services team works with students to help them through challenges and monitors our students' well-being.
  • We comply with drills required by the state, including drills related to fire, severe weather, lockdown, and evacuation.
  • As part of our partnership with emergency responders, each year, we meet with police and fire agencies from throughout our district to discuss safety issues.
  • Emergency responders train in our schools.
  • We have a school resource officer at the school and a marked police vehicle on campus.
  • Our school security team monitors Glenbard West's building and grounds, both in person and via surveillance camera.
  • All visitors are screened at the main entrance and must provide a driver's license, which is scanned through a background database.
  • During the school day, only the main entrance is open, and it is manned by security staff members.
  • Staff members wear name tags and ID lanyards, and all students carry a student ID.
  • Exterior lighting has been improved.
  • As part of tabletop drills conducted with safety consultants, our staff rehearse procedures and react to a crisis simulation.
  • We've extended the hours of campus security staff.
Our district-wide Safety Security Committee reviews each school's plans to ensure they are current and being implemented. We continually review our emergency procedures and study best practice related to school safety.

Our students know it is their responsibility to talk to an adult if they ever feel there is a threat to our safety. I am proud of our students and staff for taking seriously our No. 1 priority: the safety of those in our care at school.

Glenbard West High School will administer the PSAT/NMSQT for eleventh and tenth grade students on Saturday, October 13, 2018.  The deadline to register is Tuesday, September 11 at 11:59 p.m.  Click Here to go to the registration page.
