Monthly News & Updates
April 2, 2022 | Volume 3, Number 4

Happy Spring to all! And while I’m still upset that I was cheated out of a good snowstorm this winter- it will still be good to be able to get back outside and resume somewhat “normal activities” now that the mask mandates and Covid restrictions have begun to ease.
With the onset of warmer weather comes the natural uptick in physical activities. Projects like clearing debris from the yard, painting the shutters, cleaning out the garage, or planting those tulip bulbs bring the natural onset of back and neck pains and stiffness which usually follow the lazy winter months of sitting on the couch and binging seven seasons of Yellowstone! Spring months also herald the return of outdoor sports activities such as baseball, lacrosse and track and field. These pursuits also add to the incidence of injury to our spines and other joints. No wonder then that many professional athletes now turn to chiropractic care for injury prevention. So much so that all 32 professional football teams in the NFL now employ a Doctor of Chiropractic on their staff as well as most of the Major League professional baseball teams.

It is also fitting then that April is heralded as National Injury Prevention Month- and who better to lead the way but Chiropractors. By getting regular chiropractic care it has been shown to not only reduce the risk of getting hurt but keep your body functioning at a higher level to perform those activities.

Understanding Why Injuries Occur
Misalignment of the spine can lead to unnecessary tension in one part of the body rather than the equal distribution of pressure. Improper alignment of the spine and pelvis can occur after sitting for long periods of time and is common for those working in an office. So to can repetitive stress movements such as those that occur daily with laborers like construction workers and plumbers. Doing the same movement over and over like hammering a nail or screwing in a fixture on an assembly line can also add to instabilities leading to more neck and back pain.

Often however, there is a combination of these underlying factors involved in an incident that results in problems. When we look for underlying causes, we may find problems in one or more of these areas:
  • Job tasks and procedures: look at the way jobs are designed to ensure they are safe and practical
  • Work environmentpoor work area set up, poor ergonomic chairs or dangerous slippery floors.
  • Management and organization: inadequate safety programs, poor communication, or no involvement by management
  • Individual worker or workforce: inexperienced or inadequate training, fatigue, or stress can all add to increased injuries.

Chiropractic Treatments for Preventing Injuries
In order to combat these problems, in our office we use varying treatments to increase strength and flexibility which are some ways we can help achieve the following benefits:

1. Reduce pain- With specific chiropractic adjustments along with the use of physical therapy- chiropractic care will help reduce the pain, improve function, and help the body heal itself.

2. Improve range of motion- Injuries that occur in the neck or back may cause stiffness and a loss of overall flexibility. Chiropractic treatments such as spinal manipulation and adjustments, trigger point therapy, electrical stimulation, and traction are all used to improve flexibility and restore normal range of motion.

3. Reduce inflammation- When parts of the body are injured and misaligned, inflammation is typically the body’s natural response. Inflammation can be characterized by pain, swelling, and sometimes even loss of function in more severe cases. Chiropractic adjustments have proven to reduce inflammation in the joints and also enhance your body’s natural ability to raise the levels of certain anti-inflammatory agents, essentially helping it to heal on its own.

4. Relieve stress- Often, getting injured on the job can lead to a buildup of emotional stress, which can be just as detrimental to the body as the actual injury. Over time, stress can lower the immune system, which makes the body more vulnerable to diseases. Stress can also cause a person’s muscles to tense and contract leading to more pain. Chiropractic adjustments release all the tension held in the muscles, which immediately relaxes the body and increases blood circulation

As we enter the month of April, remember that the key to treating any injury is to prevent it from occurring in the first place! When we warm up properly, use proper posture and ergonomics, and utilize chiropractic care along with stretching and strengthening exercise-we can keep our bodies functioning better. And that means better quality spring cleaning, gardening, and spring activities for everyone! Enjoy the beautiful weather that is to come and remember to keep moving!
SUPPLEMENT SPOTLIGHT

HistaEze

Suffering from seasonal allergies? Don't want to feel groggy with over-the-counter allergy medication? Then try Histaeze. Histaeze is a product we have been using in the office with great success in the office for several years. Histaeze is a strong combination of herbs and vitamins that help to modulate histamine metabolism in the body. Seasonal allergies are overreactions by the immune system to what should usually be seen as benign substances. Histaeze helps to regulate how the body produces and responds to the release of histamine, which in turn, can help alleviate most of the allergy symptoms. It does this by promoting a healthy balance between the immune system's response and the breakdown of histamine, so that you can enjoy your Spring walks without the sneezing, watery eyes or runny nose. Let's take a look at the key ingredients that make Histaeze so effective.

- Quercetin is often called the king of flavonoids, this is because of how powerful it is as an antioxidant helps to mitigate the inflammatory process, by reducing the amount of histamine your mast cells release.

- Vitamin C is one of the most well-known and commonly used vitamins that has been clinically proven to reduce the release of histamine.
- Stinging Nettle is a perennial plant that has been used for thousands of years, dating back to the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, as well as native tribes in the Americas, because of how well it helps to restore natural function of the upper respiratory system.
- Last but not least, the key nutrient found in Histaeze is called Tinofend. This is an extract from the plant Tinospora Cordifolia. This plant saw a great increase in its use in the early 1900s because of its immune modulating functions. The polysaccharides and polyphenols found in Tinofend have been shown in studies to help regulate key metabolic mediators that stimulate the activity of immune cells called macrophages. Macrophages help to eat up pollen dust and debris brought into the upper respiratory system by your environment, as well as helping reduce any excess histamine that may be released.

As a blend of all these nutrients, Histaeze is a great alternative to over-the-counter antihistamine medication for seasonal allergies without the grogginess.

Question of the Month

Should I work out before or after my adjustment?
This is a question we get asked often in our office, and like many answers we have to respond with the common phrase “it depends.”
In relatively healthy individuals, an argument could be made for both the before and after treatment workouts. Chiropractic treatment before exercise helps to ensure proper joint motion and muscle function so that when you exercise you are less likely to injure or further aggravate any existing condition. While getting treated after a workout helps to boost recovery time, reduce muscle soreness, and improve circulation.

In patients who are in active care for a spinal condition, it has been shown that these patients recover much faster if they work out after getting a chiropractic adjustment. Exercising after a treatment helps to promote muscle strength and pain-free range of motion.

Ultimately for relatively healthy people, it comes down to how you can arrange your schedule to accommodate both. The important part is that patients maintain a healthy and active lifestyle where healthy eating habits and exercise are part of the picture.

Recipe of the Month
Spring Vegetable Lasagna

This healthy Spring alternative to a heavy meat lasagna might be a great addition to your Passover or Easter Holiday meal! No-boil noodles help get this crowd-pleasing vegetarian lasagna in the oven fast. Using a mandolin isn't essential, but will make quick work of producing thin, uniform slices of roots that cook super-evenly and look stunning. Serve with a mixed green salad with red-wine vinaigrette and crusty bread.

Ingredients
·      1 tablespoon unsalted butter, plus more for the pan
·      2 ½ cups low-sodium vegetable or no-chicken broth
·      1 ½ cups mascarpone cheese
·      1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme
·      ½ teaspoon chopped fresh oregano
·      1 ¼ teaspoons kosher salt
·      8 cups tightly packed fresh spinach leaves (about 10 ounces)
·      9 ounces no-boil lasagna noodles
·      3 cups thinly sliced carrots, turnips and/or radishes
·      8 ounces crumbled farmer's cheese

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Coat a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with butter.

2. Whisk broth and mascarpone in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat until smooth, about 5 minutes. Add thyme, oregano and salt; remove from heat.

3. Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add spinach and cook, stirring, until wilted, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat.

4. Arrange 4 noodles in the prepared baking dish, slightly overlapping. Top with 1/4 cup of the spinach and 3/4 cup vegetables. Pour on 1 cup of the mascarpone mixture and top with 1/3 cup farmer's cheese. Repeat to make 4 layers. Cover with a piece of foil coated with cooking spray.

5. Bake the lasagna for 25 minutes. Uncover and bake until the edges start to crisp, about 15 minutes more. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Important Update regarding Masking Guidance
On March 17, 2022, the provision of the New York HERO Act requiring masking has “ended” without it being renewed. Therefore, apart from those health care settings identified by the Commissioner of Health in her recent determination (March 2, 2022) which only applies to "facilities or entities regulated under Articles 28 [Hospitals], 36 [Home Health Care Services] and 40 [Hospices] of the Public Health Law," the mask requirement does not appear to apply to private practice settings in New York State.
Therefore- as of March 21st- we will no longer be requiring the wearing of masks in our office. However- we still strongly encourage those who are unvaccinated, as well as those with higher risk, or any individuals who would still feel more comfortable- to still wear a mask when in the waiting room and common areas of the office.

We know it has been a long two years and we greatly appreciate your cooperation through this process. We are very proud of the fact that our office has never been forced to close and no patient or staff member has been infected due to exposure here. Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe!!

As always, if you have topics you would be interested to hear more about- drop us a line or call the office and we would love to hear your suggestions!! Check out our Facebook page for the most current information!
