College’s New Strategic Plan

Guttman Forward 2028, the new Strategic Plan endorsed by the College Council on Dec. 1, identifies 5 pillars that underscore the college’s commitment to:

  1. Elevate Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging
  2. Support Student Success and Academic Excellence
  3. Amplify Employee Vitality and Engagement
  4. Advance Growth
  5. Optimize Operations

Each of these 5 pillars define college level strategies, key performance indicators and targets to guide the college toward Guttman’s desired outcomes. The implementation of the Strategic Plan will be enhanced by coordinated multi-year plans in academics, enrollment management, technology and facilities. To ensure accountability among college leadership, members of the President’s Strategy and Implementation Team (PSIT) will serve as Pillar Champions, providing guidance, sharing expertise and suggesting resources for strategy implementation.

Leading the college community in the five to six year process of conceptualizing and finalizing the Strategic Plan is Assistant Dean Elisa Hertz. She states, “The new Strategic Plan starts our next era of success. It is a chance to renew our commitment to college priorities; recharge our hope and optimism for positive outcomes; and refocus attention on moving the college forward.

President Adds Perspective

National Workforce Panels

This month, President Larry Johnson was invited to share his expertise on two panels describing how academia’s strategic business alliances support student career readiness and address employers’ workforce needs. On Jan. 18, he presented “Supporting Small Businesses” at the American Association of Community Colleges’ 2023 Workforce Development Institute in Indian Wells, CA.

On Jan. 25, Dr. Johnson voiced his higher education perspective on “The Future of the Workforce,” joined by fellow thought leaders Maria Flynn, President and CEO of Jobs for the Future, and Radha Ruparell, Teach For All’s Head of Global Leadership Accelerator. The panel, sponsored by Nation Swell, held collaborative salons in three cities – New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. – bringing together national change makers and social impact amplifiers for cross-sector collaboration.

2023 President’s Speaker Series

The objective of the annual President’s Speaker Series seeks to illuminate the stories and experiences of key figures in New York City and abroad while introducing the Guttman community to persons who are champions for student success and community colleges. This year’s theme, “Synergizing through Collective Impact and Bolstering Equitable Outcomes for Communities of Color,” was chosen to magnify the work of educational and community-based organizations that are implementing transformational change and positive long-term impacts with NYC’s most vulnerable communities.

This year’s first session, “Drum Majors for Equity in Education,” occurred on Jan. 26. It featured a Q&A session with Mahaliel Bethea, Director of My Brother’s Keeper with NYDoE, Jako-Douglas-Borren, Director of Programs at Brooklyn Community Pride Center, Nakita Saxon, Director of Strategic Enrollment at Arizona State University, and Jeff Gu, Co-Founder and Policy Director of Make Us Visible.

Celebrating Black History Month

With the theme “Black Joy: Liberation Through Resistance,” Guttman not only celebrates but makes Black history from January through March 2023. As a proud Minority-Serving Institution (MSI) and Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), the entire college community is immersed in rich, inspiring programs and fun, intellectually stimulating artistic and musical events.

“African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, in all forms, especially the racial terrorism of lynching, racial pogroms and police killings since our arrival upon these shores. These efforts have been to advocate for a dignified self-determined life in a just democratic society in the United States and beyond the United States’ political jurisdiction,” says Director of Student Life Andrew Bennett. “Beginning this month, we are looking forward to honoring individuals who have created the moments and community that have supported the resistance movements and provided a space for Black people to express love and joy.”

Black History Month Committee members include: Brittany Amede, Dalvin Hill, Sylvester Allen, Jaclyn Helms, Brandon Frazier, Lori Ungemah, Keshia Daniel, Natasha Trueblood, Danny Cordova, and Christopher Roth.
