Taji’s New Pair of Shoes
PEORIA (April 5, 2024) – On Monday, Peoria Zoo's male giraffe, Taji, received a special gift: a brand new pair of shoes.

Concerned about a persistent limp, zoo and veterinarian staff decided to sedate the giraffe for diagnosis. Since they suspected a broken bone, experts from the Zoo Hoofstock Trim Program were engaged to join the procedure. Due to the possible complications associated with giraffe sedations, the team included additional support from the Brookfield Zoo and Binder Park Zoo, which totaled over 40 members working in coordination.

"It was truly a team effort, spearheaded by our veterinary team, with every member of our staff pitching in, and the invaluable support of our esteemed colleagues from other Zoos," stated Yvonne Strode, Zoo Director. "I'm proud Taji is on the mend and will be out to enjoy the yard and the summertime giraffe feedings soon!"

Radiographs confirmed a broken bone in the left front foot so a specialized shoe was fitted to take pressure off the area to allow for healing. It was also determined that the right foot would benefit for a shoe so one was customized and applied.

Taji recovered quickly, walking shortly after the procedure. His new shoes will stay on for three months, ensuring his continued well-being.
