CT Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission forms a new partnership to help Connecticut charities
For the first time in its 26 year history, the Connecticut's Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission has chosen to partner with a Connecticut-based non-profit organization to lend support to their work and co-host a major fundraising event on their behalf. The goal of the Commission is to help bring statewide awareness and support to the work of various outstanding organizations and programs that are in keeping with the spirit and vision of Dr. martin Luther King.
The Commission has chosen the Danbury-based Hord Foundation as its inaugural partner. The Hord Foundation is an organization of great purpose and extraordinary accomplishment and is an ideal partner for the Commission. Hord has been providing scholarships to college-bound minority youth in Connecticut for 23 years, putting college within the grasp of many who would have been unable to afford the high cost of tuition. |
THE HORD FOUNDATION
Since 1993, The Hord Foundation has awarded more than $3.3 million in college scholarships to minority students in Connecticut. As a result of this work, Danbury H.S. has the highest African American graduation rate in the state. They also have the highest rate for African American students attending college, with the great majority of Hord students going on to attend college in Connecticut.
An important part of the ceremony Saturday night will be the presentation of four special Martin Luther King awards by the Commission honoring four distinguished citizens from across Connecticut.
The honorees for 2012 are:
- Leadership: Michael Buscetto lll, Councilman New London
- Community Service: Tom Ficklin, FICKLIN MEDIA GROUP New Haven
- Humanitarian: Principle Edward Robbs, Broadview M.S., Danbury
- Chairman's Award: President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D, Naugatuck Valley Community College-Waterbury
MLK Commission chairman Dennis King noted, "By honoring these individuals, we honor ourselves."
The Connecticut Martin Luther King Holiday Commission was established to ensure that the holiday commemoration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the state is meaningful and reflective of the spirit with which he lived and the struggles for which he died.
