CFVI Earns GuideStar's Highest Seal of Transparency and
Coveted 4-Star Rating from Charity Navigator
U.S. Virgin Islands, September 21, 2021  The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI) has earned the highest level of recognition via two coveted nonprofit sector designations. For the second consecutive year, CFVI received the 2021 Platinum Seal of Transparency by GuideStar, the world's largest source for nonprofit data. And for the third consecutive year, the foundation received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America's largest independent charity evaluator. Both honors are a direct result of CFVI's strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency.

In order to achieve GuideStar's Platinum level, CFVI provided extensive organizational metrics, such as in-depth information around financials, goals, strategies, capabilities and results, which gives donors and funders meaningful data to evaluate nonprofit performance.

"I encourage our network of donors and community partners to visit our profile on GuideStar to see what we're all about," said CFVI President, Dee Baecher-Brown. “We’re thrilled that our GuideStar Platinum Nonprofit Profile and its associated benefits help us better communicate CFVI’s exciting initiatives to a local and global audience."
Since 2002, using objective analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a 4-star rating. In 2011, Charity Navigator added 17 metrics, focused on governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness, to its ratings methodology. These accountability and transparency metrics, which account for 50 percent of a charity’s overall rating, reveal which charities operate in accordance with industry best practices and whether they are open with their donors and stakeholders.

“The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands’ exceptional 4-star rating sets it apart from its peers and demonstrates its trustworthiness to the public,” according to Michael Thatcher, President and CEO of Charity Navigator. “Only a quarter of charities rated by Charity Navigator receive the distinction of our 4-star rating. This adds CFVI to a preeminent group of charities working to overcome our world’s most pressing challenges. Based on its 4-star rating, people can trust that their donations are going to a financially responsible and ethical charity when they decide to support the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands.”
“It’s important that our donors and grantees trust that we’re using their donations wisely to accomplish our mission of enriching the quality of life in the Virgin Islands for present and future generations,” said CFVI President, Dee Baecher-Brown. “Our 4-star Charity Navigator rating demonstrates to our supporters our good governance and financial accountability.”

About GuideStar Nonprofit Profiles
In February 2019, GuideStar joined forces with Foundation Center to form Candid, a new 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Today, GuideStar is a service of Candid. The GuideStar database contains a profile for every tax-exempt nonprofit registered with the IRS. The profiles are populated with information directly from nonprofits, the IRS, and other partners in the nonprofit sector. Candid encourages every nonprofit to claim and update its profile at no cost to the organization. Updating allows nonprofits to share a wealth of up-to-date information with the more than 13 million people who visit to learn more about nonprofit organizations each year. Updating also allows nonprofits to share information with the more than 200 philanthropic websites and applications that are powered by GuideStar data, such as AmazonSmile, Facebook, and Network for Good. To reach a given participation level, organizations must complete all required fields for that level. The GuideStar participation levels, acknowledged as symbols of transparency in the nonprofit sector, are displayed on all updated participants' profiles in the GuideStar database.
