CFVI Receives $50,000 Grant from Liberty Foundation

Subawards to USVI nonprofits support education, arts and culture,
environmental protection and social wellbeing
U.S. Virgin Islands, June 29, 2021  The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI) has received a $50,000 grant from the Liberty Foundation. The funding will be used to support education, arts and culture, environmental protection and social wellbeing in the USVI. Liberty Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Liberty Communications, which serves mobile customers in the U.S. Virgin Islands since the acquisition of AT&T’s operations in the territory in October 2020.

“We are truly grateful to Liberty Foundation and Liberty Communications for their timely outreach upon entering the USVI market. Their commitment to being a part of the communities they serve is truly inspiring,” said Dee Baecher-Brown, President of CFVI. “We look forward to continuing to work together to engage Liberty Foundation and its employees in supporting a better future for our Virgin Islands community.”

Thanks to the funding from Liberty Foundation, CFVI has made grants in the four pillar areas outlined by Liberty Foundation: education, arts and culture, environmental protection, and social health/wellbeing. Specifically, subawards totaling $50,000 have been provided to the following entities:

  • Lutheran Social Services of the Virgin Islands’ Queen Louise Home for Children (St. Croix) - provides residential foster care for children who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected ($3,750)
  • Nana Baby Children’s Home (St. Thomas/St. John) - provides 24-hour care to children in crisis, and a home for children in need (newborn to 12 years old) ($3,750)

  • UVI Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service (St. Thomas) - to support mangrove restoration efforts in St. Thomas ($10,000)
  • Boys and Girls Clubs STTJ (St. Thomas/St. John) - hosting a multi-disciplinary summer camp program for children residing in the Oswald Harris Court housing community and surrounding areas ($20,000)
  • Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts (St. Croix) - hosting a theater and music arts summer camp program for children in the Marley Homes, Walter I.M. Hodge (Sufferelli) Housing Community, Fritz Lawaetz Housing Complex, and surrounding areas ($10,000)

“CFVI has a long-standing service record with some of the most vulnerable communities in the USVI,” said Yadira Valdivia, Executive Director of Liberty Foundation. “We want to replicate the same positive effect in the USVI that we have seen with the donations Liberty Foundation has granted to Puerto Rican nonprofits. We are thrilled to work with CFVI’s excellent staff members and help them to make the most of the funds from this donation.”
