President's Update

Dear Families,

I stopped by Winfrey’s Chocolate Shop in Stoneham this past Thursday evening just a half hour before they were to close. I was glad to get there in time. I wanted a few small gift items for friends I would be meeting on Friday. Dressed in a St. Xavier H.S. sweatshirt, sweatpants, and sneakers, I entered the store, ready to browse a bit in the small, beautifully displayed, sweet-scented showroom. Just two steps inside the door, I heard a booming “BROTHER PUCCIO!” from a clerk behind the counter across the room. Suddenly, the eyes of two other customers and two clerks were on me. I smiled, waved over, “Hi! How ya doing? and as I got closer, I was happy to recognize MC senior Teddy Luscinski. He was effusive in his greeting and asked eagerly several times, “How can I help you?” I explained I wasn’t sure what I wanted and would browse a little. While we chatted, Ted shared with me some of his history at the store and cheerfully explained how his senior Christian service was going at St. Patrick’s in Stoneham. A woman manager near him, motioning to me, asked, “Is he a priest from St. Patrick’s? Ted replied proudly, “No he’s from my high school!” I quickly filled in “Malden Catholic” and introduced myself. She said, “Oh, he’s doing a great job… hard worker.” I was happy to hear that and also happy that Ted said he was enjoying his service at St. Pat’s. I made my selections and left with a smile thanks to Ted’s warm welcome and with a great sense that we had a worthy MC representative “out in the world.”

I had somewhat similar experiences two weeks ago when I visited 3 of our Christian Service sites in Malden and found our students doing well. One stop was at the “Immigrant Learning Center” on Main Street. I had never been there and, in chatting with an assistant Director, discovered that over 350 young-and-older adults take classes there, learning to speak, read, and write English. It’s great work, and I was so impressed that MC senior Stephania Constant-Posy was helping to teach two classes!

I’m not surprised when our seniors do well, but always quite delighted! We’re already missing them around campus. The days of late-April and early-May at MC are somehow strangely different from other times of the year: happy-sad, somewhat subdued. We’re giving placement tests to incoming freshmen and A.P. Exams to outgoing seniors; there’s the fun of prom and the excitement of spring athletics and drama performances – but all tinged with a sense that something is fast-coming to its close. And that’s okay! In fact, that’s the way it should be. We’re meant to be a launching pad! Everybody – and I mean everybody! – students and staff alike are getting weary by this time of year because the work is hard. But faculty and staff are convinced it’s worth it, and students who don’t already realize the worth, will know it soon enough.

There’s a line I love from Acts 1:10-11 that we will hear this week at our Ascension Thursday School Mass. As Jesus ascends, vanishing from view, we’re told, “While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments (angels) stood beside them. They said, ‘Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.’” Imagine the doubt and anxiety of the disciples as their teacher, their anchor, vanishes from sight!  But Jesus promised to send His Spirit. The angels scold people gawking at the sky, suggesting that their sight should be on earthly things. There’s work to be done! As the ”familiar” passes from the sight of our Class of 2024, we can trust that God’s Spirit and MC’s influence will fortify their journey, and guide their adventure.
