President's Update

Dear Families,

As I reflect on my time as a student at Malden Catholic, I am reminded of the profound impact those years had on my life. Graduating from Malden Catholic, although it feels like it was so long ago, remains a vivid and cherished memory. I can still picture myself sitting in the gymnasium, filled with excitement, walking across the stage in my cap and gown, and handing my grandfather his Golden Jubilarian diploma. These distinct memories from that day in 1995 have stayed with me and continue to shape my journey.

For the past 25 years, I have had the privilege of experiencing high school graduations from the perspective of an educator. When I first began teaching, I remember the excitement of donning the black robe and marching in alongside my colleagues. We felt immense pride as we listened to the biographies and celebrated the remarkable achievements of our graduates. Transitioning to an administrative role further opened my eyes to the complexity and significance of commencement. There is an incredible amount of work that goes into making that day extraordinary. The behind-the-scenes efforts—coordinating the flowers, preparing the speeches, arranging the setup, conducting rehearsals, and perfecting the line of march—are all crucial details that ensure the day is perfect.

As I sit here and write this note, I find myself reflecting on the past four years. This group of Seniors began their journey at Malden Catholic under unique circumstances. They were divided into cohorts—blue, gold, or red. Some attended school on Mondays and Thursdays, others on Tuesdays and Fridays, while a small group remained remote for the entire year. Mandatory COVID-19 testing, masks, social distancing, and eating lunch alone at their desks became the new norms. It wasn't until the following year that the entire class was together. Gradually, things began to return to normal. Friday night football games, drama productions, and lively lunches in the cafeteria resumed. Through all the trials and tribulations, this class has thrived, taking full advantage of the amazing opportunities Malden Catholic has offered and creating new ones. They will be attending some of the best colleges and universities in the country.

This year’s graduation holds special significance for me personally, as it is the first time I am experiencing it as a parent. I feel extremely fortunate to have shared this journey with my daughter over the past four years and take great pride in knowing that she and her classmates have the foundation they need to succeed in life. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the parents for trusting Malden Catholic to guide their students over these past four years. On behalf of the entire faculty, staff and administration, it has been and continues to be an honor and privilege to serve your families. Thank you, and God bless.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey P. Smith '95, P'24 ‘26
